ugh.... now I have those songs stuck in my head! Damn you!

The KH songs never moved me - always so old fashioned and legalistic lyrics - sung with no emotions. Gag.

Too bad they don't have new music from time to time with real feelings, written from the heart. I LOVE Chris Rice's song "Untitled Hymn" - I have posted a short part of the song below but it just doesn't do justice without hearing it with the music:

    Weak and wounded sinner
    Lost and left to die
O, raise your head, for love is passing by
    Come to Jesus
    Come to Jesus
    Come to Jesus and live!

    Now your burden's lifted
    And carried far away
And precious blood has washed away the stain, so
    Sing to Jesus
    Sing to Jesus
    Sing to Jesus and live!

    and the last chorus...

    And with your final heartbeat
    Kiss the world goodbye
Then go in peace, and laugh on Glory's side, and
    Fly to Jesus
    Fly to Jesus
    Fly to Jesus and live!

    Now THAT'S a worship song!

I played the piano at the Kingdom Hall throughout the 70's and 80's, before a circuit overseer came through and told me my services wouldn't be needed any more. (Not that I played badly, it was just that the Society wanted to "unify" things more by using the tapes / CD's at the local meetings. )

So I do have quite a few lyrics still burned into the synapses.

Here's one I liked to play (although the words now make me gag):

I think the title was "Appreciating Our Spiritual paradise" or something like that...

This song has a distinct Hawaiian sound....

Gracious Jehovah God we thank you for our spiritual paradise

In which by study, prayer and meetings we are aided to be wise.

We thank you, Jehovah for having made known

Your wonderful purpose to gather your own

Oh may our conduct e'er prove worthy of the good news that we teach

So that at no time we may stumble sheeplike ones we seek to reach

(I probably mixed lines from various verses together ... Haven't been to the hall in 4 years now...)

And the worst one of all...

    "The Resurrection Hope"

Lazarus lay sleeping in a cold stone grave

    How his sisters mourned him

    None there him could save...

If only Christ Jesus had been there before

Lazarus would not have passed through Hades door

(Change key to a happy mood)

    At the grave Christ Jesus

Gave a great big shout (Ok I'm forgetting this part)

    To his bestest buddy

    Lazarus come out!

    O what great rejoicing

    Filled his friends that day

    bla bla bla....

Kiss the son lest god be angry and you perish in the way. Ours is the god of true prophecy....

Oh wait, I don't think those two go together...

Loyal Love, God is love. These truth cheers us from above (???) Loyally let's send his son. For whom us the ransom won. bla blabla bla bla bla bla bla, bla bla bla bla bla bla bla, Hey there all you thirsty ones. Come and drink life's water free, yes come drink you thirsty ones, ours is the god of true prophecy.

    D'oh!!

Nosferatu yer killin' me! [Screaming with laughter]

Does every song end in "ours is the god of true prophecy"? Gawd I can barely type I'm still ROFLMAO....

when eyes of blind ones see again,

when ears of deaf ones hear again,

you too will see the dead arise, (excuse me, but I really dont want to see the dead corpses rise out of the ground, thats scary)

You've just brought back bad memories for me.

There was a very elderly brother in our cong who used to play the piano organ for the meeting songs. The elders were always on at him to switch to the pre recorded tapes but since he was still PO he wouldn't.

One memorial meeting, he compromised and recorded himself playing the songs for the memorial. Anyway, the mistake he made was to put the tape recorder on the organ when he was recording.

Came the meeting night, no one had pre listened to the 'music' assuming it would be all right.

The tape was switched on for the first song and out came the sound of one hundred cats being strangled and beaten to death! I kid you not it was that bad!

What was worse still, the congregation carried on singing the song over this dreadful racked, unsure what else to do.

No guidance from any one, the sound attendant dare not turn the tape off because, after all it was the PO who was playing the wretched instrument.

Finally the PO, red face, marched to the back of the hall and switched the tape off and the congregation carried on singing unaccompanied.

What was funny was people's reaction afterwards. Not that they found it funny, but they were ashamed because of all the studies, new ones and relatives they had brought along to the memorial, and what a bad witness this would be.
