stilla, we read and benefited form Esop's fables, none of those characters were real but they still had value. I can still find value in the story whether I believe Adam or Eve ever actaully existed physically. ABSOLUTELY 100% CORRECT and I agree with you

The elders call me one of Jehovahs Witnesses so even that is not quite correct

A witness can be in good standing and not agree with the blood policy .I am in good standing with the congregation but believe that Adam and Eve is allegorical - what is the problem? I am a witness in good standing and attend meetings but do not belive the WT is the one true religion. I am a witness in good standing but hate the disfellwoshipping and reinstatement policy which I think is anti-scriptural. I am a witness is good standing but think evolutionary forces ar eat work in the universe -what is the problem?

Stilla, Does anyone in the Hall (like the elders, for instance) know your views? You could be DF'd for apostasy if they knew, whether you "taught" it or not. Privately holding "incorrect" beliefs is grounds for DF'ing. What is the problem? Here? No problem here, we love ya'! At the Hall? Well, that's another story... Dave

u are so sweet, one day I hope I get to meet u.

This God, Jehovah, that the bible portrays is not fair. He punishes mankind for one mans error, he sends bears out of the bush to kill children for making fun of some old men, he takes away the promised land from Moses, there are many more examples but here is one that really kills me,

Why take away Satan's influence AFTER Armageddon? Why not do it before he kills billions of ppl BEFORE Armageddon and see how we all do without his 'evil' influence? IF Satan and his gang are the cause of all the problems on earth, why kill us for it and then remove HIM? JUST REMOVE HIM now and see how we get on without his influence?

yet is a friend of Abraham, who would have killed his son for him, David who had numerous wives and had a man killed, Lot who had intercourse with his own daughters and offered them to a raging mob instead of the Angles, forgave a king, manasah (sp) even if he is noted as being a vile person in the Bible, but took side against Cain b/c he did not like his offering. Remember the couple who were struck down b/c they withheld money on a land transaction. It seems that it is all very subjective , God picks and chooses who he will forgive and allows the favored ones to do just about anything, but if u are not favored, any small act can cause fire to come down out of heaven.

I have spent years defending God, trying to make sense of this, but it just does not make sense

.I'm open to anyone who has a reason that it makes sense.

    Assuming the story were true...

What if A&E were not necessarily stupid, like sterotyped 'dumb blonde' sortes (apologies to all blondes here! ) which is how they are often portrayed? They were not children, they were adults. They surely did understand "don't", even if they didn't understand the full implications of their choice as far as punishment.

I think they did understand some of the consequences though--that they knew would be pushing God away. They didn't push Him away weakly, or by accident. There is a change in the core of a person when s/he determines to do anything very purposefully, and especially if that decision is to do something either very right or very wrong. I think this at the heart of the story--their determination to deliberately push God away for something 'better' for one's self. (In paradise, their only 'want' came after a temptation to their ego, which is quite interesting to think about.)

I had somehow believed for years that A&E didn't know what death was... But why not? Could they not have even seen dead plants, and understood the concept? I think they MUST have recognized the concept of death, or else they would not have taken heed to the warning about death. In fact, it says Eve was told she wouldn't die, but actually get something better--equality with God, in a sense. She knew what death was, and weighed it out. (She did at least understand that things were very harmonious while they followed the single law they had.) So, a decision was obviously made about faith... who to believe as to whether they would die or not, and how "good" it would be to know both good and evil (I think they could only knew good, but with limitations)... and if this potential gain would be worth the risk. Breaking of their trust is the big issue.

A person might well understand that adultery will cause trouble and heartache and still cheat anyway... and later realize that in resisting his/her conscience, the price was even harder than was anticipated. If a marriage is good but a spouse gives into cheating, the grief and guilt suffered after adultery may not merely be troublesome, but crushing. It's amazing how some rather small and quick decisions (esp. for egotistical reasons) can up-end a person's entire world.

BTW, the story says there was a lot of blaming going on later (e.g., God got indirectly blamed by Adam for giving him such a temptress as a wife), yet no protest of "That's unfair!" about the consequences by either A or E. The story is about a tragedy of choice, rather than an unfair situation imo.

This story has a great deal of interesting details, and is quite thought-provoking!

    BeBu,

That was interesting and thought provoking. One thing that crossed my mind as I pondered if they truly understood the real implications of death, is this. For years the public was warned that smoking could be harmful to your health. It could cause death. Some peole listened, but a lot of people did not. They smoked. Honestly, until u have seen lung cancer and what it does to your body, and the horrible death u will die, I don't think u can truly understand what that warning means. Young people do not believe they will die. Oh intellectually they know they will , but they do not really believe it. It is far far away and in another galaxy. .

The reason I refer to A&E as children is b/c they lacked experience with other humans They may have seen an animal die, but they knew they were superior to animals .Even the Bible speaks of God wanting us to be as children(be willing to obey) (don't ask me where that is, but i do remember it) They had only been speaking to God, and apparently now a snake. (wouldn't that have been Eve's first clue-the snake was talking) They had all their needs met, much as a parent does for a child. They did not have to think too much, just obey. Why did God not want them to have knowlege good and eveil? Yes the snake appealed to their ego . But by making this so secretive, God sort of encourged it. The WTS says that God had to test them to see if they would obey him and be loyal. Why? He created them with free will, so why not just let them carry on .If problems occured, surely God could handle them.

I know what the WTS tells me is the correct view of this story, but I'm not so sure.

The "Christian" god, the Muslim god, the god of the Jews: none of these is fair. The whole Bible (that I am sure is tampered with over and over again to read the way the translators want it to) is full of pretzel logic. Why? To try to keep those who will believe, under control. And many times, those who refuse to be under control are tortured and murdered. Why should anyone be surprised? The Bible is full of stories of its god torturing and murdering and throwing horrid, violent tantrums.

But hey, who says their gods are real anyway? Maybe it's as I suspect and they are really just Satan anyway.

well...I get the same feeling when I think of the story of Adam and Eve and some other stories...But I try to take into account that..the Bible was writtin HOW long ago?? They obviously talked different then..I have problems with these things sometimes because God was not created perfect...he just is perfect,..and is it all our fault that we are inperfect? no. But I do believe that God loves us..and that I just don't understand it all.

I think that Armageddon will come (just not the one the Jw's envision) and that anyone that thinks they completely understand the Bible will get a big suprise! I know I don't understand it very well.
