    Englishman:

Monarchies are more stable then republics? How do you define stability?

The Swiss republic has lasted hundreds of years with great freedom for its citizens.

The English monarchy is only stable because it is accountable to the people through Parliament. The Royals are your countries' greatest draw for English tourism but don't you think of the Prime Minister as the real leader of the British people?

I took it as a reference to Cromwellian times

    It was, 1649 - 1660

Sorry but I think someone trained from birth is in the best position to be head of state. They have no need of more power and no one argues about who really owns anything. Ultimately who are they going to embezzle from? I?d rather have stability over generations than a quick change every 4 years.

The only reason why the republic that formed from the English Civil War failed was because it was run by Puritans and it was more of a dictatorship anyways (thanks to the Lord Protector). Funny thing, I learned more about English and European history than Canadian.

But I must say that I am a bit of a republican, why can't we replace the Queen with a President in each commonwealth country and elect him/her every 10 years. Kind of like the Irish model.

The puritans were a factor and Cromwell wanting this son to take over as Lord Protector on his death wasn't taken well. I think the various factions of republicanism and scheming for power between the aristocracy, dividing army and navy had more to do with the chaos and threat of further civil war had more to do with it.

    Oh dear, oh dear!

At least we in the land downunder can be certain of our origins - we're convicts and proud of it!

Guess who made the better job of a country?

**Ozzie ducks for cover as the Merry Cans and Brits unite (for once) in hurling abuse at the convicts**
