I should add that I don't specifically store, but I have about a months worth of food in my cupboards and freezer, coal, candles, and about a years worth of gas for the cooker.
In the Hebrides you have to be fairly self-sufficient, for the long Winters.

I also have a couple of fishing rods, and know where to get clean water, if it came to that

To be honest I haven't got a clue what's on the cards - I'm not preaching here- just quoting!:

    (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 45:26 - 32)

26 And in that day shall be heard of wars and rumors of wars, and the whole earth shall be in commotion, and men's hearts shall fail them, and they shall say that Christ delayeth his coming until the end of the earth.
27 And the love of men shall wax cold, and iniquity shall abound.
    28 And when the times of the Gentiles is come in, a light shall break forth among them that sit in darkness, and it shall be the fulness of my gospel;
29 But they receive it not; for they perceive not the light, and they turn their hearts from me because of the precepts of men.
30 And in that generation shall the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.
31 And there shall be men standing in that generation, that shall not pass until they shall see an overflowing scourge; for a desolating sickness shall cover the land.
32 But my disciples shall stand in holy places, and shall not be moved; but among the wicked, men shall lift up their voices and curse God and die.

    (New Testament | Matthew 24:3 - 15)

3 ΒΆ And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?
4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.
5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.
7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.
9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake.
10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.
11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.
12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.
13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.
14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.
15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)

Q:Just a word to the wise, you've hit a number of JW triggers there, and probably caused a cold shudder to go down several spines.

We sold that stuff for years, and are intimately familiar with it.
Most of us reject it, too.

Sure - not trying to jog unpleasant memories - just suggesting that there isn't really anything specific said so for me I watch movies like Day after Tomorrow (which I looove) and then start looking for winter gear.

Will society fall apart? Only if Social Security fails....

Actually, when I lived in Seattle I put together an emergecy box with flashlight, batteries, candles, sterno, a pot, iodine tabs for water purification (yuk), teabags and sugar, a couple cups and bowls, a couple campbells soups, pairs of gloves in ziplock bags, toilet paper, matches, can opener, knives spoons, forks, and a couple of instant heating MRE's (Meals Ready to Eat) I got from an army-surpluss store.

It's a lot like packing up your troubles in your old kit bag. It takes a lot of the worry of disasterous events taking place and not being prepared.

From our days cruising we have packets of water, instant food, and a plethera of emergency gear, most at home.

In the garage we have camping gear including a propane stove, and bottles of propane.

Don't forget the water heater! Shut off the intake and you have up to 55 gallons of hopefully untainted water.

We used to buy extensively backlogged food, but with the kitchen remodel (much larger storage capacity) we decided some of our hoarding behaviour needed modified, so we don't buy and store as much. We can still eat well for 3 or 4 weeks even when it is grocery time! A lot of this behaviour is that if we want something we don't want to run to the grocery store to buy just that one item.

    ..funnyish story.

I find it hard to sleep when its light so I got hold of one of those masks they give you on the aeroplane. I put that in my bedside drawer alongside my night time willy wear. Well my straight laced Grandma comes over to stay and we vacate our bedroom and well you can guess the rest... I gave up trying to explain my sleep issue and just crawled into a hole to die of embarrasment.

Come to think of it what was she doing in my drawer!!!?
