Humanity is not near as fragile as many people believe. Instead of societal breakdown the world is heading to a bright future. Not by divine intervention but through the advancement of science and new technology. Thanks to the most creative problem solving tool in the universe, the human brain.

I try not to think about the worst scenerio, it only brings me down. When I would drive into Chicago I used to picture the buildings in ruins and no one there. Maybe it was just wishful thinking because of all the traffic. But no I don't store food, just maybe a few weeks to a month supply. Doing the precautions for a disaster only makes me feel fearful so if a natural disaster happens, I'll just wing it.

The world is much more controlled than people think. There is more control of people and the economy than ever before. The us govt even has a huge fund at hand in order to stabilise or play w the stock market. Those in control have more humanomic info on hand than has ever been had. Communication is instant. Food and relief can be had within hours. I think that we are safer than ever before, provided those in power want it that way. I think that they do, because a healthy, contented herd (that's the people) is good business for govt and corporations. 'Course, we could get hit by a super volcanoe or a huge meteorite. aaaahhaaa.

I don't usually think of "end of the world" scenarios; I guess if it happens, much good a case of soup will do me, right?
However, I do keep a stock of grub in my cupboard, partly because I, too, live in a place with long, harsh winters. But the main reason is that I'm just scared of going hungry ever again. I promised myself as a kid that when I grew up, I'd always have food, no matter what, so I always keep a stash. Also, candles, matches, Excedrin, lots of soap, and twenty bucks, just in case. I wonder if perhaps a lot of the survivalists out there began life as deprived children, became hoarders, and the survival thing was just a rationale to make it all seem more socially acceptable somehow. I have no idea: it's late, I've not slept for a long time, and I'm just musing.
