Blondie:
Your comments are right on - especially the one about having "mature sisters" help single mothers or even just single women.
I have also observed that if a publisher (male or female) has mental health issues they won't touch him with a ten foot pole.
Do elders/PO's really care?

Watchtower needs a paid clergy class like the rest of organized religion.

Witnessed this first hand.
Just this past weekend I was sitting with a group of my dub relatives listening them talk about how important love was.....how important it was to show it, how important it was to have this quality if you were to identify with Jehovah based upon their last study in the their draw close book, when this lady they all knew called out of the blue. It only took a nanosecond from them to go from their mealy mouth talk of showing love to showing hate and contempt for this lady since she was in a disfellowshipped state.
It was actually comical to watch as they all closed ranks with each other refusing to speak to this lady unless she was properly reinstated.
They really have no idea how utterly hypocritical their actions were.

I stopped attending meetings at the KH in August 1999. I waited for a call from an Elder, none came. So much for "shepherding" then.
Coming up to memorial in 2000, expected maybe an invite, no invite.
September 2001, two Elders call round, unfortunately I was out. My son spoke to them, they said they had called to encourage me to come back. It was round that time that I had learnt from forums such as this one. That the WT had started a campaign to get "inactive" ones back, because numbers had dropped off.
In those two years, from August 1999 to September 2001, I had received no personal call, no telephone call, not even a note through the door, not even a Memorial invitation slip. Not once did they contact me asking how I was.
What makes this worse is that the Elder whose "Book Study Group" I was in and was one of those who called on me, lived a 5 minute walk away from my home. Another Elder lived just a bit further. A Min Servant lived in the same road as me, another MS lived just around the corner in the next road. Not one of these in two years ever contacted me.
Thats what eventually made me decide to Disassociate. I wrote them the letter, enclosed about 20 pages of what I had discovered about the WT in those two years and sent a copy to them all.
I never heard from them since then.

there are some that do, but there are none in my wife's hall. it's been 3 weeks since i DA'd myself. my wife has made it to most of her meetings, but not a single elder has approached her to offer support. she defends them by saying: "well, they smile at me." but i say that is not enough. they're not doing their job!
now, her parents (who hate me now more than lucifer), are calling her elders from across the country to ask them to offer more support to her. what a sham. they don't care about her as a person, or what she is going through. their year's are divided into preparing for the two biannual CO visits. -

As elders, some have become as it were zombies in pleaseing the Org, and not Jehovah in shepherding the flock of God / Jesus in their care. Even those who shepherd with the greatest of care and the best of motives will fail to do so if they are directed by a wrong a source other than the bible it self.

Let me ask this.
Of those that are putting down the elders, how many have been elders?
Possibly you have no idea how much time, effort, etc it takes to be an elder. Then to be treated like crap by the ones in the congregation that you have tried to help and have spent hours upon hours with, treated like crap by the CO, treated like crap by the DO, treated like crap by the tyrant "Gods of this system of things". I can go on. What really got me was that a lot of the people that you spent most of the time on appreciated it the least - would make the most cutting, bitter, untrue remarks.
I agree that some elders are in it for the glory and are self serving; but those are the minority. Most are truly trying to help, although mislead by the Borg, they are trying their best.
Been there, done that, won't ever do it again!

I've known only a very few who really cared about people. They have *all* burned out and either quit or stepped down with time. They get put under tremendous pressure to conform to the wishes of the rest of the body in matters they do not agree with. After a while, the conscience cracks and they're out. Either weakened because they feel like a failure and doomed to be fence sitters for the rest of their days and looked down on as a washout, or, hopefully, their eyes become opened and they find some way to escape with or without those they love.
My heart goes out to any brother in a position of authority who is pained by the hypocrisy and falsehood within the organization, and who sees the damage that this group causes, but who feels trapped with no escape.
It is no way to live...

What do we expect from the elders?
Not much more than what they receive from the wbts, in the way of training and treatment.
The elders are treated much like the middle echelon of a large old greedy corporation.
A corporation whose leaders do not trust the middle echelon and view the workers "publishers" as hourly workers of little education or value. Since they can be readily replaced.
The middle class and especially the workers are so far down the social ladder they experience very little trust of their actions, thoughts and especially their performance and least of all their personal feelings, from the leaders.
The middle class and especially the workers are expendable entities. Their needs or feelings or fears and especially their well being are of no consequence or interest by the corporate board of directors and the one or two that direct them.
This attitude, this belief this way of dealing with people is in place and filters down the ladder of command to even corrupt the workers.
After all how can a worker that knows he may have to shun those closest to him at the order of the corporation at any time, ever show loving kindness and become close and kind to others.
He risks the turmoil and grief of losing friends and protects himself by keeping his distance and never realy getting too close.
This is found throughout the corporate world of the wbts. Filled with back stabbing and lies all in the effort to get higher up the ladder of a nonsensical cult, of little value that provides nothing of worth to anyone.
Only a few things of value, that society provides freely and with out all the sanctimony.
