I don't personally live perfectly by it because I really don't know much about it. But your environment does have alot to do with your mood. That's why people go on vacations, that's why people feel different at an office than they do at home. For me, some things are just common sense. Like if your house is cluttered you will feel frustrated and less productive than someone with an orderly house. Or hanging a crystal in your east facing window- the sun rises in the east and it's pretty cool seeing all the little lights dance in the room when you wake up. Lighting candles in the bedroom- adds to the romance.

    Wow Sirona!

How did I manage to rattle your cage so bad? I made a 17 word post - I stated my opinion and asked a question, that's all. I don't think I was spouting off drivel (that's what the Fêng Shui practitioners do).

    Want some examples?

Here are some of the claims made of Fêng Shui:

What does Feng Shui do for you?

Feng Shui?Brings harmony and balance into your life
    Improves your health
    Helps you achieve promotions
Develops harmonious relationships to better fulfill your social life, and
Increases your professional success in your business or career.

orFeng Shui can create environments that:Attract Relationships
    Generate Prosperity
    Shift & Transmute Illness
    Strengthen Your Health
    Create Career Opportunities
    Enhance Your Well Being
    Support and Nurture Your Needs

    Where's the impirical evidence?

I'm also in a state of complete ignorance on the merits of other common practices like circumcision, faith healing and horoscopes but that won't stop me 'deriding' them if I want to. Any absurdity promoted by an individual or group must be able to defend itself against ridicule.

And anyone who derides the beliefs of others, without a decent proposal as to why it's "drivel", should surely expect to be lambasted for their intolerance?

I'm a born-again Christian that loves Feng Shui. How weird is that? LOL Love ya Ross! *waves from Texas*

Ok fine, fair enough. I still stand by what I've said but I'll tell you what I'm going to do, I'm going to spend at least a couple of hours researching Fêng Shui (I'm at the City Library later as it happens). I'll try to be objective (difficult now) and I'll come back here when I at least know the basics of Fêng Shui.

By the same token, can anyone here who's criticised my stand make a defence of Fêng Shui? I understand that much of the criticism wasn't for attacking the practice but for taking pot shots out of ignorance but still...

There's nothing to defend. It's either you like it or you don't. It's a matter of taste. I took a few interior decorating classes until that petered out. But I learned that restaurants will purposely put green in there business because seeing the color green makes you eat more. Alot of people put blue in their bedrooms, it's because it is a "calming" color. I can't remember where, but I remember reading that some scientist did research on brain waves while showing people different colors and pictures. The brain reacted with different emotions. And never put pure red in a kitchen, it will only make you hotter. That is what professional decorators are being taught and it works because when you enter a well balanced beautifully done room everything just flows and it makes you feel what the decorator wanted to accomplish. I think Feng Shui is just an ancient asian form of interior decorating. But if you'd rather throw your furniture in the room and put up a mini blind, no one will judge you. Just do what fits you!

Look you guys, talking about Feng Shui is like talking about Kung Fu. First of all, which kind are you talking about? Most people in the West think of kung-fu as martial arts, but the expression actually just means 'skillful work' - it could apply to any number of things. Even if you are referring to martial arts in general, there's a ton of those too - it makes no sense to say it works or does not work, each system has different techniques and so forth.

Although I don't know much about Feng Shui, I do know enough to be willing to bet good money that the stuff you have seen is not anything that resembles the original/real stuff, and frankly it's unlikely that you will - or will recognize it as anything having to do with it because if it's a book it's probably written in Chinese, or it's a person that knows about it. And from what I have seen it is actually not something you can just learn from a book, I have it on good authority that the authors of Feng Shui books just copies each other anyway - so even the info is pretty much worthless. (and I'm not sure if he was referring to Chinese or English books, if it was the Chinese books then the English stuff is another step removed from that) Come to think of it, they also intentionally do some things wrong as they do with some published martial arts material, the old don't give away the trade secrets thing. My guess is the info basically would not be in a format that people can just read and understand anyway. Think of it this way: It is probably something like what Jehovah's Witnesses is to what Jesus was actually about.

By the way, it's not interior decorating. There's not much detail I can go into, but I can tell you that they are based on a lot of the same theories that Chinese medicine is based on, it's like that with a lot of things. I mean... Interior decorating is probably to Feng Shui as modeling is to martial arts.

I guess that was a weird analogy, but it sort of makes sense if you are dressed to kill..

I got a couple of books on the subject, it is interesting.

I don't believe in it for a second but millions of people do.

I think that it does have a benefit in that it often leads to a good organized, clean and often organic design whether you are talking about approaches to color or interior or exterior design.

    Nicolau,

Glad you've decided to do some research.

I read a couple of books on the subject a few years ago. I didn't apply it in my home, but I can see some possible benefits of doing so. Someone mentioned the effects of colour (which is scientifically proven) and I know Feng Shui advises certain colour combinations in certain rooms of the house. Also its suggestion of water features, minimalist furniture, location of one's bed etc. MUST have an effect upon those living in the house and I'd expect that effect would be positive. As for the deeper spiritual aspects of the practise, yes I am ingorant of those.
