Boring talks - elders not invited again

An elder in a previous congregation used to bore the pants of everyone each time he went up on the platform. When ever he gave a public talk it was like sitting at an insurance seminar.

I must say though he was a nice guy although stuck rigid and by the book brooklynne style. One day he came up to me and asked if i could give him a lift to a hall about 60 miles away. I was to polite to say i cant. So i humbly did my bit for Jehovah and drove him to this hall to give his talk.

All i remember thinking was ,what is everyone thinking here. He must have used about 40 scriptures and neither raised or lowered his tone of voice all the way through the talk. I thought it would never end. But hey i did my bit for jehovah and that hall was surely blessed to hear such wise from the heart counsel

Once a brother becomes an elder, counsel re his talks ends. Unless he requests it. No matter how bad it is.

One sister told me about a 5 week period of exchange of speakers with one congregation. The talks were incoherent, disorganized, impossible to follow. The talk coordinator was told by the PO not to exchange speakers with that congregation again. It is hard to find speakers; first, few elders can give more than a handful of talks; even fewer are very good at it. And with the quality of ex-elders posting on JWD, I think many of the good speakers are gone with the wind.

You always gave really good talks bro, for the reals! Maybe I was just biased, but you were leagues ahead of the PO and assorted elders even when you were a measly ministerial servant/grunt. Those brothers in San Antonio gave you flack cause they were hellah jealous!

I can also recall some speakers being extremely boring but generally the ones with better education (university level) gave the more interesting talks.

I know when I was on the body of elders I used to make a point of saying that boring and poor speakers should never be invited again

Justr wondering - how did you fare? Were you gifted as one of the most 'popular' of visiting speakers?

    Just wondering.

Not only did we not invite the retards back, as the school overseer I actually counseled two speakers who were terrible before we didn't invite them back.

Where did you hear this from Blondie?

The TMS overseer was to council any local Elder giving a talk who needed council.....such as going overtime. This was done in private of course.

If an Elder was a pisspoor speaker, he was NOT to be on the speakers list. He could give public talks in his OWN congregation however and bore the hell out of the local publishers.....he just couldn't bore the hell out of publishers in another hall.........go figure.

Yeah, I agree with Grumblestiltskin, elders were counselled (not the speeling??!!) even if it wasn't always public - like after the Instruction Destruction Talk.

The elder bodies around here tell the TMS overseer not to offer counsel unless the elder requests it. Could be different in other areas. I know what the written/official rule is. BTW, my husband, my uncle, 2 cousins, and 1 brother have been TMS overseers in 5 different congregations with the same policy in each.

My father thought he was a comedian and used the platform as such. His talks were rather funny and
    not too dull.
At one congregation he was pulled aside after the meeting and was told that he used "too much humor"
Guess they wanted the cookie cutter speaker.
