I get sad for different reasons, and by different songs (like pretty well everyone else, I suppose. So here are a few that just get to me:
"Little Rosa" by Red Sovine.
This is a story about a poor man whose little girl has just died. He went into a flower shop to get a rose, but he couldn't afford one. He begged the florist for a rose for his "little Rosa". The florist said that if he told his story, then maybe he could help him. He told the story, and in the end, the florist gives him the biggest and brightest red rose in the store so the man could place it on his daughter's grave....Nobody can listen to this song and not be deeply moved!
"Teddy Bear" by Red Sovine
This is the story about a little crippled boy who has lost his daddy in death, who was a trucker. The little boy would be at home, playing with his dad's short wave CB radio and microphone, talking to all the truckers on the road, using the lingo of the truckers and his daddy. His mommy had to work, and they were poor, and the mother could not really replace the dad in this little crippled boy's life. So he would love to talk to truckers on the radio. In the song, this trucker was listening to the little boy, and asked him "What's your handle" and he replied "Teddy Bear". He explained how he and his mom were alone since daddy passed away. And he acknowledged just how busy all those truckers were....Too busy to listen to a little kid like him...But if he could just have a ride in one of them rigs, like he used to when his daddy was alive........
The song goes on the describe how this trucker decided to take a detour to give this little boy a ride in his rig. As he rounded the corner, he discovered all these trucks lined up for blocks, waiting to give this little boy a ride, and how this little boy was in his glory, as each one in turn, gave him a ride. Momma Teddy Bear came on the CB and thanked all those truckers for what they did for her son....I defy you to listen to that song and not be moved!
Amazing Grace
I don't care if you are religious or not, this song can get to anyone. There is an amazing history behind this song, and how it came to be written. No-one could possibly write such a song unless they had been there. I don't have the words in front of me, but most people know it already. It hits me whenever I attend a funeral service, and the song is played or sung, or both. Bagpipes accentuate the atmosphere, which goes right thru me, being of Scottish descent.
Candles in the Wind- by Elton John
I mention this one, because the world was deeply moved at the funeral of Princess Diana, at which Elton John sang and played this song of his own composition. Originally this was meant for someone else, but the words fit so appropriately about a woman who was taken before her time.
Tears in Heaven moves me to tears anywhere!
I am not familiar with The Living Years, but those lyrics are haunting!!!!! Makes me tear up reading them...
And of course, Everything I Own by Bread... written by the singer in memory of his father.
You sheltered me from harm Kept me warm, Kept me warm You gave my life to me Set me free, Set me free The finest years I ever knew, We're all the years I had with you And I will give everything I own, I'll give my life, my heart, my home I will give everything I own Just to have you back again. You taught me how to love, What its all, all above You never said too much But still you showed the way In my new, I'm watching you Nobody else will ever know The part of me that can't let go I will give anything I own I'll give up my life, my heart, my home I will give everything I own Just to have you back again Is there someone you know You're loving them so But taking them all for-granted You may lose them one day Someone takes them away And they don't hear the words you long to say I would give anything I own, I'll give up my life, my heart, my home, I will give everthing I own Just to have you back again Just to touch you once again |

Earth Wind & Fire / Burning Bush
What does it take to show an illustration
Of the hurt and the pain of a nation.
One glowing look upon a ragged canvas
Tells the story of our past and present situation
That old bush just keeps on burning
Nobody seems to show they're learning
That old bush just keeps on burning.
I wonder will we ever feel the flame.
Our way of life on total exhibition
Shows the way in which we live of an
Imperfect nation.
This tree of life so far from perfeciton
Share a little love to improve our situation.
That old bush just keeps on burning
Share the hope for future learning
I wonder will we ever feel the flame
Flow of light could really stand a listen
Bring the dark to the light, show us
What we've been missing.
Not many men are satisfied
Without no light, there ain't no pride
There's gonna come a time,
Things that are on your mind.
Trust and you will find
Everything in your mind
True love is here to find
Simple as number 9
Multiply you will find
Peace and love all the time

I didn't know "Everything I Own" was written about his father. I always thought it was a beautiful song, but now it takes on a new meaning for me.

"Passive" by A Perfect Circle-
Dead as dead can be
or so the Doctor tells me
I just can't believe him
ever the optimistic one
I'm sure of your ability to become
my perfect enemy
Wake up and face me
don't play dead 'cause maybe
some day I'll walk away and say
you dissapoint me maybe you're better off this way
seeing you here
cold and catatonic
I catch a brief reflection
of what you could and might have been
it's your right and your ability
to become my perfect enemy
wake up and face me
don't play dead 'cause maybe (because maybe)
some day I'll walk away and say
you f**cking disappoint me
maybe you're better off this way
I know that you can hear me
why can't you turn and face me
you f**cking dissapoint me
passive agressive bullshit
Daddys need to grow up too, the O'Kanes.
Kentucky Rain, Elvis
Daddy don't you walk so fast, Charlie Rich (and everyone else)
I Should Have Been True, the Mavericks
Gumby
This post has made me terribly depressed, but I have to thank some of you for reminding me of songs that I had forgotten. "Wildfire" was a favorite of mine as a kid, and "Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word" has collected dust inside of my ipod.
Love "Passive" too, but maybe we need a angriest song post.
In the movie "Mulholland Dr." there is a version of the Roy Orbison classic "Crying" done acapella in Spanish by Rebekah Del Rio. It tears me up. I would have to give it the "Saddest song in the world" vote.
Other runners up include:
Patti Smith - Pissing in a River
Ani Difranco - Dilate
Alison Krauss & Union Station - It Doesn't Matter
Stereophonics - Rainbows and Pots of Gold
Tears for Fears - The Hurting (The whole album)
