Chirac is not a friend to free market. He recently stated that ""liberalism" is the newest threat to Frog-dom, like communism was in the 20th century. His definition of "liberalism" being in the classical sense of indivdual rights of life liberty and property and a free market system. (ie. Jeffersonian and Adam Smith) Here in the States, "lberal" is connected to leftist. Chirac wanted the EU constitution passed, in order to validate his existence in office to his party. It's amazing the things you learn when you put down a WT.

It's amazing the things you learn when you put down a WT.
......Or when you actually take the time to find out how each country applies its politics.
A UK Socialist has a very different view on political life than does a French Socialist and an Italian Socialist may not fit into the one size fits all world-view that the US likes to peddle as accurate information.

the_classicist,
Do understand spoof posts? ... dry humor? ... or do you, like so many, feel that everything is oh, so, serious such that they have to go about proving themselves, regardless of the intended humor. Get a life. By the way, Chirac did say today that he is going to resign. Otherwise the rest of the post was a total spoof. I really don't care about the EU or Socialism one way or the other. - Jim W.

amazing1914, sorry i couldn't read your mind, although it's a relief to know you're not the person i thought you were. :) the thread was not in the "humor" section, therefore, we did not go into it thinking "funny funny ha ha". who can blame us?

Jim, sorry to piss on your parade but I dont think that "aligning themselves with the US" is anything to do with the French decision.
If anything, they rejected what they saw was a pro-globalisation treaty, something for big business.
A cynic would say that they French will vote against anything that doesn't mean that France will be the center of the EU.

I say, get rid of the thread and no one will realize the mistake that was made.

Wow, what little knowledge of foreign affairs
Yes, sadly confirming the steryotype of right-wing Americans.
