Jourles:
If you were to rank in importance the positions of a doctor and an actor, why does a doctor get paid less than an actor such as Tom Cruise?
Because doctors are interchangeable. More people can be doctors than can be Tom Cruise. Having Tom Cruise in a movie earns more money than having another actor - even one who's better at acting and better-looking (and there's no shortage of those). He earns precisely what people who have money are willing to pay him for what he does, no more, no less.
I see nothing wrong with paying Tom Cruise $100k a year for his "work."
But why should he settle for $100k? He's worth millions in box office receipts. If you offered him $100k a year, and someone else is willing to pay him more, why should he be forced to take your offer?
It is all about outdoing the other companies.
Exactly. Why shouldn't it be?
