I am not sure this is any different from the position the Society took back in the 1980's where they said a person could be DFed for stubbornly holding to a position not in conformity with their teachings even if they were not actively promoting their ideas in the congregation.

Hi Truthseeker,
Excellent post. I see this as the result of the Society reading the advice given on ex-JW sites on how to "fade" from the organization without getting DF'd or DA'd. The Society has caught on to this tactic, and is trying to close this loophole. So be it. If the Society keeps turning the screws hard enough and long enough, they will break the JWs backs, and squeeze them all out of the organization. - Jim Whitney

Bethel's NOT paranoid, they're just accurately understanding and reporting what's happening.
They've got a problem. They know they can't ignore it. They really don't have very many tools available to them to defend their assets and their cash flow. Their past strategy of isolating the dissenters and isolating the members has been effective with the enthusiastic cooperation of the Witness people. They've got very good reason to believe it will keep working.
They've got a sort of delicate balancing act to pull off. They have to preach love while being really mean . . . and still avoid a revolt. So they go right to the edge of the revolt while keeping a very close watch. When they see the pot is about to boil over, they turn down the heat. To do that, all they have to do is allow the more passive voices to have some print space.
There's a LOT of monitoring and reporting. The agents in the congregations monitor other congregation members and that information is passed to the Circuit agent level. The Circuit agent reports information to the District agent. The District agent reports to the Service Department or the Zone agent level. It's all processed and compared and then strategy is mapped out for months or years.
All the monitoring and reporting back to the Society isn't about literature placements or meeting attendance. They can see that information on their computer screen. It's about loyalty and obedience and mood. -

It all sounds like an Orwellian world the subtle control and surveillance, while the dubs don't know it they are being gauged.

So first they can read hearts (i.e., disfellowshipping unrepentant wrongdoers) and now they can read minds?

I think they are saying all these things as part of a psychological warfare that is calculated to deter people fron developping anti WTS thoughts. It's the usual mind control games.

Watchtower August 1, 2001 pg. 14:
First, since “oneness” is to be observed, a mature Christian must be in unity and full harmony with fellow believers as far as faith and knowledge are concerned. He does not advocate or insist on personal opinions or harbor private ideas when it comes to Bible understanding.
This isn't a new revelation.

Good grief... as if WTS wants to get weirder and weirder. But there has always been that witch hunter mentality in the org. Next time you see an elder put your hand on your head and say "quick tell me what I'm thinking."
Blondie great picture! LOL

Avishai beat me to it -- Thought Crime. (George Orwell’s book titled "1984")
I wonder if they will now start to enforce this even more.
