    It's too hot.

    It's too humid.

    It's too hot and humid.

    I have a migraine.

I have to make a call on a shy person; only want's one person at a time.

I have to drop this off at the PO; I'll meet the group in the territory, then don't saying you couldn't find them.

I never liked going out on a saturday morning, especially during the winter. How popular were we when the householder opened the door and let in the cold wind/snow/rain???

Sounds about right tho, for elders to start harping on about this being expected. On the platform you are always told "do whatever you can" using the parable of the poor woman in the temple. In all honesty, when is this enough?

I think break lasted almost a full hour with people ordering entire lunches.

Was this "break" and nipping off to the bakery thing just in America. I don't remember a single occassion where we went out to a cafe or restaurant before, during or after field service ever. Very rarely an older sister would provide cake and tea at her home - but only after a good 2 or 3 hours of solid door knocking.

Saturday & Sunday were field service days for as long as I can remember!!! and for like at least an hour at a time.

talking about the 15 minutes - The older ones in the ministry need only do 15 minutes to be counted as active - how pathetic is that????? 15 minutes - They still want the old to report 15 minutes. I said to my gran - I'm sure most of the old ones talk more than 15 mintues a month about Jehovah, so she mentioned that this wasn't just about informally talking to people, but to make the old ones feel that they had actually contributed because they feel that they don't.

Sick isn't it that an organisation can make the older ones feel like they are not giving enough, even if they spent their whole lives pioneering......

I remember these times well...popped into nearly every shop in territory...then would get back to the car and eat Snickers...and a cup of takeaway tea from the local cafe....fond memories...then do another half hour and then need another break...we did get busted once or twice but there wasnt a lot they could do except moan on about doing more and that Sister Elderly has been out morning and not had one break blah blah blah...

So we would just move onto another territory...and lo and behold we would need a break again...as you can probably tell... I really worked hard in the misery ministry.

crumpet...i know you just being tongue in cheek...(your cheek) but fs for me wasnt about selling

it was about discussing the bible with people..it was about genuinely believing that what i had to say could make a difference in their lives..it was also an oppurtunity to work alongside others and help them make progress or listening to their doubts and fears...and we would invariably make arrangements todo something that afternoon or evening...good times

thats what i miss..but just because i miss it doesnt mean i can go back to it

I'm sorry, tij. I can see that you'd miss something that you truly enjoyed. It's easier when you didn't like it much and weren't good at it in the first place (like me).

You seem like the kind of person who'd be ideal in some sort of counseling or social service type work because you genuinely like people and want to help. It's probably too soon, but maybe at some point you could look into some sort of volunteer work along those lines??

Crumpet, I know this break stuff varied from congregation to congregation even within the same area. In some KH's folks would pack their own lunches and be out all day, only stopping for a half an hour or so at lunchtime to have a sandwich in the car, other places they might stop for 15 minutes mid-morning and grab a coffee to go or something.

That first congregation I was a part of went way overboard...and I think it had to do with the attitude and practices of the PO and his wife. They were masters at time wasting while appearing as though they were busy in the preaching work and I think that attitude permiated the congregation. I suppose there isn't anything wrong with turning Sat. morning service into more of a social outing, but it irked me because I had other things to do (like mowing the lawn, painting the house, grocery shopping, cleaning, etc) on weekends and if I wasn't going to get a decent amount of service time in, It felt like a wasted morning, you know?

Being from America I think I can speak with some authority on the subject...

    Meet at the hall at 9:00am; 15 minutes to cover the days text, arrange car groups and territory assignment if needed;

15 minutes to the territory; door to door until 10:15 to 10:30; back in the car; drive to closest place to take a "break", McDonald's usually unless in the country, then it was the closest diner or general store; 15 to 20 minutes there, back in the car, back to the territory; door to door until about 11:45; back in car; back to the hall.

All said and done, 2 hours of field service.

The problem was that as time went by the 15 minute break became 30 minutes. McDonald's became nicer sit down places with waitress service. Then people were ordering entire meals. For a while, Saturday service was almost recreation because we spent more time goofing off on break than anything else. Then the CO came and blasted us for taking breaks. After that we were lucky to find a tree to pee behind.
