I bought a '76 Grand Prix in 91. It was all I could afford. It was $350. I was told that I should have kept on using public transportation until I could save up enough for a four door car. Sorry, but PT did not take me to my job. I had to walk a mile from the bus stop to my job. Forget about buying milk and food for my family.
Grrrrrr, I still get angry about the way I was treated for buying the car I could afford.
The experience of a Christian elder in Germany, who also happens to be wealthy, is noteworthy. A Christian brother, knowing something about his financial status, asked him why he drove a Volkswagen (a less expensive car) and lived in a modest apartment. Becoming very serious, he answered: ‘Because if I drove a Mercedes Benz (a luxury car) and lived in an ostentatious manner, it could have a damaging effect on the spirituality of my Christian brothers and sisters.’ How different that attitude is from the world’s! To make a "showy display of one’s means of life" is the way of the world. (1 John 2:16) According to the world, the measure of success is the amount of money and material possessions a person has. But may that never be so in the Christian organization! We need to be armed so that none of this type of satanic thinking infiltrates our own thinking and that of the Christian congregation. At the same time our own godly devotion along with contentment will result in our not being critical of those who may seem to be overlavish in their way of life.—

Elders told you that??
At first I was incredulous but then I remembered one elder who retired up north somewhere, sold his house, moved down South with his big pension, bought three times the house he had back home and then told my brother who had just bought his first house after his first child was born that he needed to concentrate on the ministry. He told him we was working too much. He told him he didn't need to work a full time job, that he could get by with less. My brother just looked at him and told him that if the elder wanted to pay his mortgage, car payment, medical bills, buy milk, food and diapers for his kid, then he might think about it...til then he would thank him kindly for minding his own business.
I knew an elder with a nice 2-door jaguar. they didn't have any kids either...very neat freaks
