Me and my lady friend were attacked in Capetown by a guy with a knife. I was frozen of fear, she kicked him very hard, but became little injured by the knife, he took of injuired also. I did basically nothing, just stading there. Did not make me feel very proud.

I had also some problem in Rio.

So the places I feel not safe are the cities in South Africa, Brasil, and also I did not feel to safe in Phnom Pheh late at night.
In big American cities I really felt very unsafe, and things look scary.
never been in Irak, but felt safe in Iran, and other muslim countries.

Europe, australia en new zealand is reasonable safe imo.

Very safe cities are imho, tokyo, bangkok, hong kong, scandanavian cities. Also the smaller pacific islands etc are very safe.

What is your opinion about this?

I have never been overseas, so my experience is limited. I've walked midtown Manhatten at night...though not alone...and had no problem with it at all. I love New York! LOL Although, I'm sure if I'd been in some of the rougher neighborhoods, I'd have a different opinion about that.

Boston can be scary because of all the homeless in the street, but I've never had a problem. Chicago was very nice and I felt safe. Downtown Philadelphia was completely deserted at night, which was freaky....hardly any taxis on the road or anything. Downtown San Diego was lovely. Kansas City was a bit frightening (my friends and I went to a bar in a kind of bad part of town). Fairbanks...well, I lived there and knew where not to go. LOL

Okay, I've been lucky. I've never been mugged at all, so I've felt pretty safe in all of the places I've been. I almost always am with groups of friends, so maybe that's why I feel pretty confident. I imagine that if I ever am held-up, my thoughts about how safe I feel will completely change.

I don't feel safe when I go to Milwaukee. It's a little too big for me. I actually felt safer in Las Vegas when I went there.

So sorry to hear of your attack! That is a terrible thing. I, too, have been lucky so far and have not had such a situation. As a student of urban planning, and the experiences I have had in my urban neighborhood vs. much larger cities (all in USA) I find that a more populated neighborhood with heavy traffic into the late hours feels safer than one in which the streets and sidewalks are empty. Empty space provides less watchful eyes and therefore more opportunity for ill-intentioned ones to commit crimes. I feel safer walking around populated parts of Manhattan than I do other smaller cities. Jane Jacobs wrote a great book called "The Death and Life of Great American Cities" and she builds a case for safer streets and sidewalks by community self-policing. Lights help but a well-lit empty sidewalk is still empty. Many of her examples show structures built for community activity within project housing not being used for their intent and instead being vandalized and used as places to commit crimes because of their vast emptiness. On the other hand, neighborhoods with the same quality of housing but zoned for mixed use, encouraging small businesses, are often busy and bustling with legitimate purposes, people buying groceries, a paper, waiting for a bus, etc. and therefore provide more safety than artificial empty spaces. Of course, all the city planning in the world doesn't mean much at the moment when you're terrified by a mugging or other street attack.

I live on a very small town so the crime rate is very low and I feel its pretty safe....until you look at the list of sex affenders that live in the area. needless to say i'm very careful about where my son goes when he is out.

Dustin, I've haven't been to Milwaukee in many years...my friends went last year, though, and said it was their least fav city. They didn't feel safe at all. (these are the people I travel with when I have money, so we've been to quite a number of major U.S. cities).

It probably depends on whether one is young enough to still believe one is bulletproof but here's my take on the one's I've lived in/visited.

    Houston - unsafe

    Dallas - safe

    San Diego - safe

    Los Angeles - unsafe

    New York - unsafe

    Lake Charles, La. - safe

    New Orleans - unsafe

    Pensacola, Fla. - safe

    Washington, D.C. - unsafe

St. Joseph, Mo. - safe Brussels, Belgium - unsafe Athens, Greece - safe Paris, France - safe Nicosia, Cyprus - safe

I live in Portland, Oregon, and there are places that I don't feel safe at night. But ok during the day. However, some of these areas have had recent drive-by-shootings, and other gang-related incidents. Usually after dark. Most of downtown Portland is pretty safe after dark.

I have felt safe in the following:

Most of the places Ive been in Mexico, even during Christmas when there are armed guards on every corner with guns. I don't feel safe in border towns.

    Canada

    Indian Reservations in US

    San Diego

San Francisco - at night with an escourt

    Chicago

    Indianapolis

Florida N of Miami, and Tampa Bay area, and on the Seminole Rez

    Georgia

    Utah

    Arizona

    NewMexico

    Colorado

    Outside of Philly

Seattle, most areas, but some are off-limits at night and some even during the day

Manhattan felt safe enough in 1974 when I was on the Bethel Tour.

Island of Hawaii - except for some out-of-the-way agricultural places that are fenced in barbed and razor wire!

Carrib islands of St. Martin and Anguila

    AREAS I DON'T FEEL SAFE

    Puerto Rico

    Miami

    New Orleans

Detroit - downtown, day or night

    Oakland

Some parts of Georgia, in a black suburb of Atlanta, I felt unsafe around the white guy named Bubba who was telling me the area wasn't safe for a white woman after dark. (White supremists scare the hell outta me - and I'm white!)

Arkansas scared me a bit.... the drivers are nuts!

Downtown Philly didn't feel safe during the day. This may have changed.

I have never felt as safe as in Venice, Italy, I would walk alone at night without a seconds thought, even when my mate told me she had been followed home by a guy who was masturbating, it didn't bother me in the slightest, infact I hoped to see this guy so I could have a giggle, but I dont feel safe in any British city or even town.
