I think being a jw contributes to all kinds of mental disorders. If you have something more physical like a chemical imbalance being a jw could probably make it a whole lot worse. The question has alway been does the wt cause peoples mental problems or does it attract those that already have them. I think it is a combination of both. When I see a group of them going through my neighborhood they look both chronically fatigued and depressed. They sure aren't having fun.

Yes, CF and FM are not the only 'somatic' illnesses. Some arthritis, bronchial asthma, and other auto-immune diseases can be caused by stress, and emotional illness often manifests itself in the form of physical ailments. To quote my GP, "the mind and the body are one". These illnesses are very real, and very painful, and yes, depression can play a big part. Most of the folks I know w/ CF are not and never have been JW, but I would imagine it would be very common among the members. And I hear a lot of JWs have FM,,, nope, no surprise there! Makes perfect sense to me. Their whole life is one big trauma, waiting on the end of the world and all ...
We also live in a world that is on 'chemical overload', and some of us have become the 'canaries in the coal mine' that is earth ... just look at the baby-boom generation ... and the symptoms. scary!

My mom is a JW and has been diagnosed with FM, as well as one of my brothers and one of my sisters who are also JW's and another sister who is DF'd. It certainly is an exhausting and stressful lifestyle. I remember being tired all the time. Both CF and FM are very real, but I think the stress and depression brought on by the JW way of life definitely aggravete them. I also remember a large number of women who had "nervous breakdowns" It was very common where I grew up. They couldn't take the strain of being in loveless marriages that they were roped into at the age of eighteen just so some horny brothers could get laid, and then raising children and going to meetings and in service and everything else. It was just too much. My .02 cents Suzanne

Common element in most (not all) FM ME CF illness is type A go getter personalities and careers. JWism can be classified amoungst these. Tends to affect more women then men (men don't like going to the doc).

So much for the spiritual paradise of the WTS that they peddle so much: abandon your worldly friends and relatives and come to us you will find here more and better friends and relatives.
They are under constant emotional strain because they have a destructive relationship with a negative god image, they have to suppress their instinctual desires, they fear death at a soon to be armageddon and they live in an unloving non compassionate society.
To put it in a nutshell they live each day with the fear of spiritual failure and eternal extinction. One mistake and all the hard work gets written off: by the FDS infact, not by god. -

I believe the JW form of CF is caused by a combination of all of the burdensome requirements and guilt placed on JWs combined with sever Cognitive Dissidence.
With all of that the human mind will eventually just shut down.
