Should you be afraid of being killed by a terrorist?

Do you think we will ever get to a point where we are willing to accept terrorism as "a risk that is simply a part of day-to-day life"?

The thing is, is if IronGland's recent thread about an 'American Hiroshima' has any truth to it at all, then Osama and his buds have something in store for us that would completely destroy what is currently our day-to-day lives, were we to survive the initial attack. That's the shit that scares me, a world thrown into chaos and the surviving Americans (which I think I would likely be as I don't think I live in a target area) undergoing a psychological meltdown.

Sometimes I think it's good to try to prepare myself mentally for such a scenario, but then again it's just too horrible and depressing to contemplate.

Right now it doesn't really bother me though it appears that the al quaida has accumulated a large number of suicide (kamikazi) bombers on the basis of islamist fanaticism. Big urban areas like London can't be protected 100% from determined bombers but still I don't worry.

The USA, UK, Israel, Russia, states with troops in Iraq, and what they consider to be the traitorous Arab states, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Morocco, are to them fair targets. The first three could be attacked globally. Minimise risks by not going to moslem countries where there are no doubt plenty of pro al quaida individuals in an enraged state.

I have a friend who comes from Belfast, were terrorist incidents used to happen on a daily basis, she has a husband from Dublin and she is so afraid that she can't even take him to Belfast to meet the inlaws.

I think what we should be afraid of is how far out of hand this terrorism thing gets, at the moment the risk is low but what happens if it gets worse?

Exactly, Ellie, I think people forget that people in Northern Ireland have been living with this shit on a daily basis for years.

Even the graffiti is scary (according to me).

Well Else, I work in downtown Dallas. So if "they" (and you know how "they" are) have a suitcase bomb, I'll never know what hit me. I've talked with Nina about the possibility and told her what I want her to do and where to go afterwards.

I'm not afraid, but I would like to find out what happens next.

When I was in Egypt (south Sinai) last week I heard about the London bombs and worried about friends in England. The worst bomb was on the same line I had recently used in London. I felt quite safe in my holiday hotel.

Shortly after I returned home a bomb killed dozens of holidaymakers in a hotel like mine, close to where I was staying. I also know that many people were killed last October in the tiny resort I stayed at (it consists of 3 hotels). Who knows how to stay safe. My on inclination is to avoid obvious risks, but there is no point in fearing terrorism more than any other way of being killed.

I won't run from Terrorist , if that is the way i will die then so be it but i WILL NOT live in fear.

    Amen.

I, too, grew up with N bomb drills and taught to recognize the bomb shelter signs.

I've had my bags searched at gunpoint by a security guard at a department store in Mexico during Christmas shopping. Didn't bother me any.

I don't feel any safer in an airplane or airport than I ever did.

Kevan rides mass-transit and I don't worry about him.

I was in the Morrow building in Oak City for an AA meeting exactly one year before it was blown up.

I had flown out of San Franciso Airport on (Peoples?) airlines and took off JUST MINUTES BEFORE the hijackers took the plane sitting next to ours. (1971) Eh. Whatever.

Heck, growing up JW has induced enough fear that I refuse to give into the fear-mongering.

Actually, the biggest thing that scares me is some stupid thing happening that won't allow us to move to Hawaii and enjoy our lives there.

Bob nailed it 40-plus years ago - amazing how little times change.

I will not go down under the ground
"Cause somebody tells me that death's comin' 'round
An' I will not carry myself down to die
When I go to my grave my head will be high,
Let me die in my footsteps
Before I go down under the ground.

There's been rumors of war and wars that have been
The meaning of the life has been lost in the wind
And some people thinkin' that the end is close by
"Stead of learnin' to live they are learning to die.
Let me die in my footsteps
Before I go down under the ground.

    I don't know if I'm smart but I think I can see
When someone is pullin' the wool over me
And if this war comes and death's all around
Let me die on this land 'fore I die underground.
Let me die in my footsteps
Before I go down under the ground.

There's always been people that have to cause fear
They've been talking of the war now for many long years
I have read all their statements and I've not said a word
But now Lawd God, let my poor voice be heard.
Let me die in my footsteps
Before I go down under the ground.

If I had rubies and riches and crowns
I'd buy the whole world and change things around
I'd throw all the guns and the tanks in the sea
For they are mistakes of a past history.
Let me die in my footsteps
Before I go down under the ground.

Let me drink from the waters where the mountain streams flood
Let me smell of wildflowers flow free through my blood
Let me sleep in your meadows with the green grassy leaves
Let me walk down the highway with my brother in peace.
Let me die in my footsteps
Before I go down under the ground.

Go out in your country where the land meets the sun
See the craters and the canyons where the waterfalls run
    Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona, Idaho
Let every state in this union seep deep-down in your souls.
And you'll die in your footsteps
Before you go down under the ground.
