My wife (ex) and I went to a Toyota dealership a few years ago and were looking at vans. The salesmen looked at us but not one of them approached us or said a word. We left after a bit and went to another Toyota dealership and bought a new Sienna.
I love to work out the final price when buying a car, just fun for me I guess.

My last experience - I was stupid enough to give the salesman my driver's license... which he held "hostage" for 45 minutes trying to push the sale. I finally got up, dialed my cellphone and asked for the local police department.... it wasn't until I was speaking with the cops, and asked them to send a car over because the dealership had stolen my license that the salesman finally gave it back. What a bunch of jerks....
They really do that? If that were me, I would say, "Give me my license." And if he didn't, well, I'd make the dealer look like this: ". Just give 'em a fair warning, and then when they sue you you could say once you demanded they give your license back and they didn't, they, from that point, became a robber and you needed to protect your property.

This is the salesperson's stupidity. If selling cars is a career choice, then referrals is the way to go for long-term security.
I used to work in a very high-end fashion boutique. One of the things the owner impressed upon us when training was that we do not know how much money each shopper has in her/his pocketbook. The wealthiest people will often 'dress down'. He was right!
The VW dealer here treated my father the same. They were so snotty, he couldn't get arrested in the showroom! I guess that's because they are also the Mercedes/BMW dealer, and only pay attention to the well-heeled. So, because he was sure he wanted a VW, he found a dealer in a small town about an hours' drive away. They treated him like gold, and it was well worth the drive whenever he had to get any service. And we have referred a few folks to them over the years.

The last car I bought (5 yrs ago,) I brought my boyfriend along with me, with the idea that we could stop off for a nice dinner afterward; it's so rare we get to be in the big city.
The first two salesmen I spoke to refused to talk to me. They directed all their comments to my man, and ignored me completely, even though I was the one asking all the questions. He repeatedly told them he wasn't buying a car, that they should speak to me. I finally asked them in a rather forceful voice why they didn't want to make a sale today. Then I turned on my heel and marched back to my car. Suddenly, the tag-team took me seriously and started following me, all the while jabbering about how "cute" I'd look in this lil' Honda they'd just got in- so adorable, girls love 'em, and it's purple! Yep, they lost that sale. The guy at the next place was polite, helpful, listened closely, found me the perfect car, and made the sale.
I don't get why so many salespeople are so clueless. I believe they get some kind of a commission, don't they, so they ought to mind their manners when customers (even "girls" and guys who aren't dressed formally) try to make a purchase.

For those who purposely dress down, I would encourage you not to do that. They will think you don't know anything, and will work you worse than if you come in knowing what you are talking about, and dressed nicely.
That being said, they should treat you no different regardless of how one is dressed.
For those who have no choice but to dress down, who are broke, whose credit is shot, they always pay the most. Don't think for a second that the dealer doesn't want to see them in the showroom.
The educated buyer, who can dress up if they so chose, who make some money, who have good credit, can usually go and get a good deal. They are not the ones who get taken just because they can afford it.

Oh now gentlemen, don't be whining, to get REALLY bad service you have to be a woman. Not that they don't come rushing over if you are young and attractive (which I no longer am), but they will cheat you as soon as look at you. I once had them kick me off the lot (granted it was 20+ years ago) for carrying my Kelly's Blue Book with me. (for you Brits, thats a valuation book from the bank, which I worked at at the time making car loans among other things.)
Later in life whilst married, I went in to a dealership and looked at a new Chevy. Drove it, liked it, and brought my husband back in with me to look at it. They only talked to him. They did not look at me or speak to me once. It made him really uncomfortable and he would always defer the answer back over to me, I have to give him credit there. Still pretty pissy though. Same deal when I finally bought it, they did the paperwork all up in advance and when I came in to sign all of it was in his name, my name was no where to be seen. Stupid asses. The remarkably ironic thing was that the salesperson was a woman. Go figure!
Everytime I have ever done a trade in I have been cheated. ......... heavy sigh

Now, I admit, I dress like a tramp. Seriously. I have trainers that have seen much better days with bits hanging off and they 'squelch' when I walk (esp in the posh showrooms I found ). If I have to pay more than £10 for a pair of jeans then I think I'm being done and they have to last at least 5 years.
I have worked in sales and worked at a car dealership.
What I have learned is to NEVER JUDGE A BOOK BY IT' S COVER! Having worked for a retail jewelery chain a few years ago, I learned to always be friendly and helpful to anyone, in my expirience the not so well dressed customer always had $$$$ to spend, the sharply dressed or snobby customer was usually broke. So go back wearing your worst outfit and make them squirm when you pull out a fat wad of cash.

Gretchen,
I have been looking at cars. It's time to trade in my Chevy Tahoe for something with better gas mileage. I've just been looking and oh my god they are vulchers. One son of a bioch tried to sell me a car for $19,000 and the blue book value was $10,000. I sent my dad to the dealership and they offered it to him for $12,000. He then called me on my cell and told me to come in and I told off the rip off salesman for trying to cheat me because I was female. What a jerk.
