Hi Simon,
Why do people who have something to sell alienate possible customers?
Because sales people get tired. They can meet 100 customers, and only end up having one or two doing business. Eventually, their humanity wears out. This is why I believe that car sales people need to be taken off of commissions, and placed on a salary. Then, they can be nice, and serve whether you buy or not. I work on commissions, and I can relate to this. However, a good sales persons will work to qualify a customer, and get beyond those things which wear him/her out.
As for makes of cars, go into Google and search for consumer reports. You can get a good idea as to price vs safety. One discovers that certain myths held by the public are dispelled. The next time I buy, I will do just that. However, the larger and heavier the car, the safer it can be. Not a tall car, like an SUV, but something lower to the ground, and large. This way, of some little snot hits you, you won't roll as easily, and your car will absorb more shock. Be sure to have side and front airbags included.
I didn't read other suggestions, so hope this is useful to you, and not a repeat of the same.

I am quite aggressive and actually like dealing with the dealers...usually do quite well als...check out the following site...it's the best I've seen in giving you the full idea of how a dealership works and what to do and not do (Never give your license)

I had a jerk at one of the ford dealerships here localy that WOULD NOT TELL ME THE PRICE OF THE CAR! He kept saying "well how much do you want to spend?" To which I said "fifty cents, How much is this car", "well how much do you want to spend?" Finally I left!
I pulled into the Toyota dealership, in my minivan, in 1998. I wanted to look at their Landcruiser. I was looking for a SUV type vehicle. The salesman, finally came out, walking slow. I asked him if Toyota had any other suv kinds of vehicles besides the landcruiser? He said no, and turned and walked away. I just stood there dumbfounded. Was it the minivan, or me being a woman, or what? I bought a Ford Explorer. Then Chevy Tahoe.
I will never buy a Toyota.
I am blessed with a friend who loves to negotiate and is very good at it. When he gets started, salesmen start really wanting to talk to me. I just look at my friend! If I had to buy a car myself, I don't think I would. I'd just keep complaining about the old one.
I thought you are moving to Canada? Why not wait till you move to by a car? By the way how much is $10 in the Uk compared to Canada?
