I like Tegan and Sara, tho I like their previous album better.
I got into them when I got into the Canadian music scene, which is far more interesting than much of the junk played on US radio stations. Metric, Broken Social Scene, Feist, Stars, Tegan and Sara, Hayden, P: Ano, Buck 65 all rock.
Jason Molina is on Secretly Canadian Records. he performs as Songs:Ohia, Magnolia Electric Co. and other aliases.
Some other good stuff:
New Pornographers
Neko Case
Sleater-Kinney
Reggie and the Full Effect
Mountain Goats
Piebald
Shins
Rhett Miller
Carolyn Mark
Aquabats
the Belles
Split Lip Rayfield
BAy City Rollers

Stillaexjwelder - I went to see steeleyespan a few years back! I was raised on that band (and a bit of Fairport Convention and the Clancy Brothers). I can;t believe you;d even have heard of them out there in the Syrian Republic!
My obscure band is Lawn Mower Death (although think they aren't around anymore)
