Skyman or anybody: Isn't going into harms way, like going around barriers etc... like playing in the freeway? I couldn't expect God to keep me safe. Maybe these Elders were the janitors of the congration, with no education or common sense. HL

At this time that is what they were taught to believe that Jehovah would protect you if you were doing his will. I know that is not what they put in writing now but it was what they wanted us to believe back then.

yes I know that kind of p.o.'s: stupid, narrow minded, unreasonable, simple, hard headed P.O's.

Nice how you used the mudslide to show that Jehovah does not keep you save in a kingdom hall. Most brothers and sisters would probably have understood what that was about. Nice move!

I remember the article about the mudslide. I even found it recently but can't remember for sure what country. Might have been Chili. I came to the same conclusion. A few years earlier there was an article about a tornado in (I believe) Elkhart, Indiana, and the brothers who were at the meeting were spared, but some who missed the meeting were killed. Then came the article about the mudslide. That was also a turning point for me as far as understanding that there is no "special" protection.

I will try to find the mudslide article when I have more time.

The PO called and told all us that Jehovah would not let the place blow up while meeting was going on so meeting was still going to be held ...

When you find out about flesh-eating bacteria, volcanic eruptions flattening villages or viruses that desintegrate an infant's brain and if God was living on Earth, his house would often have broken windows.

God is another word for moral responsibility and self-awareness.

Most went that night because they felt like they had to inorder to prove that they were faithful.

    Good thread!

Isn't this sad when any group of people feels that they have to "prove" anything to OTHERS to prove their beliefs?

I live in an area by Lake Ontario where we have sudden snowsqualls called whiteouts that quickly and completely obliterate the road you are traveling on. You lose ALL sense of direction in a matter of seconds and they are very scarey to drive in---day or night. They are tricky because they can occur in one place and yet it can be perfectly clear just a few blocks away.

These potentially deadly whiteouts are usually announced on the weather warnings that run across the TV screen and I cannot tell you the amount of times that the wise old elders did NOT cancel the meetings but proceeded with things as usual.

I used to get so angry when they took such a cavalier stand on the safety and well-being of all the families and little kids that would then be taking their lives in their hands just to go to a meeting where everything was just a rehash of stuff they have already "studied" at home, or that could certainly be missed for that evening!

I don't know what it is they are trying to prove by such foolhardiness, but they sure aren't getting any awards for intelligence or common sense in doing these things (and expecting all others to follow suit!) Talk about the blind leading the blind......

I was suppost to give the #1 talk that night so the PO had a little fit that I did not go he told me I was not faithful under trial.

(Proverbs 27:12) 12 The shrewd one that has seen the calamity has concealed himself; the inexperienced that have passed along have suffered the penalty. (NWT)

Or, to use a Bible translation that actually renders the verse into readable English:

Pro 27:12 A prudent man sees evil and hides himself, The naive proceed and pay the penalty. (NASB)

    Great post Skyman….

I think the country was Argentina… and Bros trapped in the hall were kind of used as an example that the high ground was safer… Totally inconsistent with JW tradition as your PO’s attitude will attest…

I got reminded of the issue last year when the Tsunami stuck the Indian Ocean… I heard some say that Brothers who were in the Hall that Sunday morning were spared because halls were on high ground (not to mention that a hall on the beach should provide quite a view of some good hard bodies when driving in to Sunday meetings…) In fact I heard that the desk at Bethel was spreading the good news that Bros who went to the meetings were spared.

I had a flash back at a situation on my part of the world a while ago.

I will only say that some dates are not the best time to roam the streets over here… The meeting was scheduled for that particular day an our PO (being the usual zealot) decided to have the meeting. Sure Big J will protect you!!!

When I was deciding if I would go on that day to the Hall, I had a little argument with my spouse… I happily went down a list of mis-happenings to Brothers on their way to and from the Hall on previous years and off course the Argentina stuff…

    We skipped this meeting.

Luckily no incidents took place that day, but I get goosebumps thinking about what could have happened to entire families … can’t think of how I could one day make a call like that… That basically took care of my ambitions to seek ‘higher privileges’…

I felt the most intelligent being in my hall on the next meeting since everyone else showed up…

I get emails from a few CO's that still think I am going to the Meetings and so get informed about inside thinking and after the Tsunami they reported that the faithful brother and sister that went to the meeting that morning Jehovah saved them. Later it was found out that no JW's whether they went to the meeting or not were killed. Why because only a small, small number actually live in that area of the world. One stiter had a non beliveing mate that died I was told.

Whatever minutiae will support their claims... and ignore that which does not. Par for the course.
