I found in my library that I still own 2 JW books, both must have survived the purge of 1995 when I threw away all the JW crap. Anyway I still own the old blue Aid book, and the red-brown Concordance. I think the original Aid book was the one mainly written by Ray Franz.
Anyway I checked out all the subjects concerning Jesus' death. I looked up CROSS - it says See TORTURE STAKE. Classic. I looked that up and it mentioned Stauros etc, no explanation, just a quote from 1 non-JW book which of course proves the JW interpretion completely.
No-where could I find information of what Jesus carried to his place of execution. Finally I found some info under IMPALING, and there the comment is made that some people question that Jesus could have carried the entire torture stake the whole distance to Golgotha. I was then dumbfounded by a great piece of info I had never seen before.
The Aid book states that assuming the tree was 6 inches in diameter and was 12 feet long, it would only weigh about 45 kgs (100 lbs). Implying such a tree would be easily carried by Jesus.
Isn't 6 inches diameter a bit skinny for impaling someone? The nails would split the whole thing in 2!! And I think it would bend under the weight. Where would Romans get 6" diameter trees from.
And what sort of tree, 6 inches in diamter and 12 feet long, would only weigh 100 lbs?
Talk about clutching at straws (or even skinny poles)!! Anyone else remember seeing this fact in the Aid book?

I dunno a log 6 inches in diameter and 12 feet long would hold a lot of weight! Sink it 3 or 4 feet into the ground and you've still got a lot of tree left to work with. As to it being 100lbs... I dunno that seems a bit light but maybe not!

Think of a 4-inch square fence post ,,, yes, a 6-inch log would easily hold a human, and you could put quite large nails into it without splitting it. I dunno about the 100 lbs, but a 33 YO healthy man shoudl be easily able to drag a 12-foot long fence post.
But I am not getting your point? The whole story is ludicrous, I agree.

Have you ever tried to bend a 2X8 that is 12 foot long? Now nail 3 2X8s together and bend it. (That would give you about the same as a 6 inch pole.) I think it would be enough to hold a man upright, but I am not volunteering for that experiment. As far as weight, 100 pounds might be a little light, but not by much.

I always thought 6 inches was quite big!

I was just surprised that I finally found something in a JW publication concerning what I consider to be ridiculous, Jesus dragging his complete torture stake to his place of execution (was it a third of a mile?). After having been beaten half-dead anyway.
And I am sure JW artwork always shows Jesus nailed to a big tree, not a skinny fence post like the Aid book says it was.

I seem to remember hearing somewhere that he only had to carry the crossbar, which would have been much shorter. Then they would have just... um nailed the two pieces... together to... form... umm a ummm... CURSE YOU APOSTATE SCUM!
I have a 4x6x12 sticking out of the back of my house over a deck. It has no supports for the last 6 feet or so. On the very end is a 60' hunter ceiling fan thats easily in the 35lbs range and it supports that just fine, no bowing or flexing at all! So I'm thinking if that was run upright it would support several hundred pounds easily!

mkr,
is it pine or hardwood? and do you think you could carry it a third of a mile uphill on your back after having been thoroughly thrashed? I guess if it's pine it may be possible?
Anyway it looks like Ray or whoever wrote the article in the Aids book was not too far off in left field with the size of the pole. When I first read it last night I thought it was way off.

Yah, that's what I was thinking, Pope. Sometimes I miss the point, though, so I was wondering.
This was something I wondered about at one point. The explanation? Well, Jesus was perfect, ya know, and prolly much stronger than a 'normal' man would be.

Talesin,
so Jesus' super-strength did it! Explains everything. :-)
I once read that Superman could never have sex with Lois Lane. Because he is superstrong and a "man of steel", his sperm would be ejaculated at supersonic speed and riddle Lois's body like millions of pellets from a shotgun. She would literally explode and her head would be blown off.
Poor Lois!
