Frustration is high

Ok here I am in my new aptartment which I love. But now I am trapped here

I had an electric scooter that someone gave me. I loved that scooter and went EVERYWHERE with it. But it kept breaking down. Just before I moved at the beginning of Aug it broke down again. And they say it is impossible to repair. At this point it would be better to just get a new one.

Ok so I still have the electric wheelchair. Right? WRONG . It broke down too

So now I am left with a manual chair. Sounds great and it is for INSIDE. But the driveway into my building has a large steep slope. Yesterday I was able to get up it (to go for my Dr appt) by rolling myself up backwards. Yup I'm building muscle but once I get to the top I am too exhauted to go anywhere.

Going down again is a nightmare. I used my old very well padded cycling gloves and going down I basically use my hands as breaks and apply stronger pressure on one side to steer. Sounds just lovely doesn't it? Rolling down hill in a wheelchair with no breaks and just using my hands. Yesterday I could feel the heat building up on my gloves despitean inch of cushioning beteen my hand and the wheel. I guess it is a friction burn. And add to that the arthritis in my hands this just ain't fun.

So I have to find some way to get some wheels. In the meantime --- The nightmare begins.

I can't do more than a tiny bit of shopping at a time. What I can bring hom in a bag on the back of the chair. Even if I use adapted buses they are slow and they won't help me carry my bags upstairs ef I bought more that the wheelchair can carry.

I can be pretty resourceful so the hunt is on. I need to get assessed and find a way to get a free wheelchair. People have said it took them up to 2 yrs to get assessed

Think I will starve before I get what I need

Oh Honey, do you have anyone you can call that can run some errands for you?

Is there a strong, young man in your apartment building that could help you up and down the driveway? I know it's not fun to be dependent on others, but it might work until you can find another wheelchair.

Lee, United Way sponsors a program here for volunteers to help people with their shopping, people with the problems you described. Does Canada have anything similar?

    Love, Blondie

No strong young men in this senior's building. I am probably one of the youngest people here. Lots of walkers though

And I don't know anyone yet. Between the unpacking and going to Montreal for 2 weeks I haven't met anyone. And the ones I have met all speak Russian lol woe is me.

Blondie I'm on the phone. I have a list of places to call but I suspect there are waiting lists all over the place.

Check with the Red Cross, Lee. I have a friend who has them in twice a week, as he is recently in a chair. I'm not sure what hoops you will have to jump through, but they should be able to help. I know how you feel, I was in the same sitch 3 years ago, thank goddess for my ex, who is my angel.

    Lady Lee-

PM me if you live near Toronto. I have a bit of time free before I move out of my place (next month). Maybe I can run a few errands for you, and/or help you lift some things in your new place?

lawrence That is a sweet offer but I'm in Ottawa

Ok The phones lines are burning up.

I have a phone number to get an assessment and hopefully they will fast track the application and I get the assessment too. That also means I should get a new wheelchair or scooter

And the place that was trying to fix the scooter is looking for a loaner for me until I get something else
