Close Encounters, I liked that one too. But I think my all time favourite has to be 2001 - Space Oddyssey (?sp). Even though it was getting a bit dated by the time I got to watch it, I found that freaked me out even more than films like Alien!
Philip Jose Farmer's Riverworld series
Isaac Asimov
Robert Heinlein
Piers Anthony
Murder mysteries
Tunnel in the Sky
Citizen of the Galaxy
Starship Troopers
All by Robert Heinlein
I like the Foundation Series, too.
Also, Fahrenheit 911 is pretty good (just kidding, the one by Ray Bradley).
Marion Zimmer Bradley's books are favorites. I'm currently re-reading "The Ruins of Isis", which is about a planet that has a matriarchal society which treats men the same way we have traditionally treated women.
For movies, I am stuck on the original Star Wars series, but I do love 2001 and Aliens and come on, admit it, you gotta love "Independence Day" for sheer entertainment value. Yes, it's a hackneyed storyline, but the characters are just so true to all the old stereotypes, and the invasion is so well done!
The original "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" with Donald Sutherland is a great scifi flick, and oh yes, that reminds me of "Flatliners", starring among others, his son Keifer.
Check out the TV series, "V", if you love scifi. It's available on DVD from the video store ...
