When I was young I can remember a WT conductor that did that; not too many were answering. But he warned everybody that he would be doing it. When the CO visited and heard he was doing this, he reamed him out saying that it would chase away visiting non-JWs.

Over the next 30 years, once I had a book study conductor try to do that; he called on his wife and embarrassed her. I heard he slept in the guest bedroom for about 3 months after that.

Officially, this is not a recommended procedure from the WTS. But knowing what area you came from Buttlight, I can believe the elders up there didn't give a rat's ass what the WTS wanted. Gods in their own minds.

Yeah, they think they are jah himself! He would do the scripture reading like that to, start with the person next to him and go around the room. What if your not a good reader? Its embarrassing to some. Especially if you get a hard one and have no clue how to pronounce the words! It should be by choice. But this particular elder was really upset when I was df'd this time around. He didnt agree at all. So I guess times change.

I loved it when someone gave the answer to the next or last paragraph. Was quite funny!

That was even worse than answering the "B" part, when only the "A" question had been asked.

I guess thats better than answering the "c" part, when there wasnt one!

When I was a kid my father was pretty much always the B.S. conductor. There was a kid about 4 or so and he would raise his hand to every question, just copying what others were doing. Once my dad called on him to "teach him a lesson" and it embarrassed him and his mother. I thought it was a pretty cruel thing to do, but my father always thought he had the right to "help" other parents raise their kids.
A few years ago when I lived in KY the conductor would go around the room having us read scriptures, like others have described. There was one brother who could barely read and my daughter said way too loud, "Man, I can read way better than him!" That was kind of embarrassing. I felt bad for the poor brother, he was really trying.
I remember my very first answer I figured out on my own, "607 B.C.E.". It had to be right, it said it right there in the paragraph!

I was always called on to read, I hated it, they did it because I'm shy, I'm sure thats it, either they did it because it was the only way I was going to participate or just to be nasty, not sure which.

yes, I was! And it was something about the holy/most holy. Whatever, it was a question that hardly anybody knew the answer to. Anyhow I got it wrong. It was 'Most Holy'. Bollocks!

Our book study conductor would like to go around the room so everyone could read a scripture, he said this way everyone had a chance to participate. Once he asked a brother to close with prayer and his response was, no. We were all shocked including the elder so he had to do it himself. Later on when I left the organization, I was searching the convicted sex offenders in our area on the internet and to my surprise that same brother who refused the prayer, his picture was on the web site... uh huh, so that was why! Made me sick to my stomach.
