  forget witch paragraph books not with me.

  anyway lesson focussed on preaching and one paragraph mentioned matt were jesus sent mary to tell the brothers to go ahead and meet him in galilie.

  11 disciples and jesus commishioned them to go therfore and make disciples, u know the rest.

  12 Jesus also taught his disciples to avoid unnecessary distractions. He said: “Do not embrace anybody in greeting along the road.” (Luke 10:4) Was Jesus telling them to be cool or aloof? Not at all. In Bible times, greetings often involved much more than a simple hello. Customary greetings included various formalities and lengthy conversation. One Bible scholar states: “Salutations among the Orientals did not consist, as among us, of a slight bow, or extension of the hand, but [were] performed by many embraces, and inclinations, and even prostrations of the body on the ground. All this required much time.”

  Also the Society likes to use 2 John 10, "If anyone comes to YOU and does not bring this teaching, never receive him into your homes or say a greeting to him."

  Paragraph 12 is a gem. I'm going to keep this on file.

  i am new here this is my first post but ive been looking at some of the topics here for 2 or 3 months.

  well i guess i should give yall a backround of myself.

  i am a teenager, so i cant tell my family(mostly jws) how i feel.

  And I was 56. I was a very indoctrinated teenager. Even got my parents involved much to my distress more recently.

  There is a lot of good advice on this board--especially going easy on your parents. Love them no matter what...but don't go back to the Borg once you're out.

  I enjoyed your book too, Don. You wouldn't remember me, but 10+(?) years ago you responded to an email I sent before I was completely out of the organization. I remember you were in the process of writing your book.

  As a Witness - What did you Notice in How Elders Got Appointed ?

  i found it amazing being raised in the witnesses to see exactly who got appointed sometimes as an elder.

  it seemed that the criteria in my opinion had more to do with getting 10 hours a month in field service, answering at meetings, carrying microphones as a ministerial servant, or handling the magazine or literature counter !

  in doing these " functions " and attending meetings on a regular basis - a man was thought to be considered " spiritually strong " and qualify to be an elder and serve on judicial committees judging people's personal problems.

For those original elder positions what that amounted to was all who were servants sitting in a big circle and going from on brother to the next deciding if any would/should be excluded for any reason from a list that would be sent (in our case to Toronto) of ones that were approved locally for appointment in bethel."

  Booby - that's exactly how Clyde described it when they changed to the elder arrangement (about 1972). Although he was in line to be almost the top dog, he decided right then that he didn't want to be an elder. He shocked everybody because at the time being appointed an elder was a coveted position. I remember being disappointed myself. Clyde did accept the position of MS for a few years before his fade.

  A few years ago one of our visiting speakers read a news article about a driver who during an act of "road rage" murdered another driver. The speaker laid the article down, looked out towards the audience, and stated, "That's something that Jehovah's Witnesses don't do." I thought to myself, "And most other people don't do it either."

  Live music in the Kingdom Halls

  i recall being young and having a lovely solo pianist accompanying the singing in our hall.. in around the late 70's the obligatory (canned, sad) recorded music replaced live musicians.. anyone have any more detailed memories of live music and the subsequent changeover?.

  I played the piano at our hall up till 1990 and quit of my own volition. I was upset about with the elders about reading my son's name from the platform that he was being "publicly reproved." They brothers told me many times that they liked my playing better than the recordings, and I know I could have continued for a long time if I'd chosen to.

  I also played for assemblies, alternating with another piano player...and yes, one of the reasons they quit was because it took "too much time" rehearsing. We were all accomplished musicians and we only got together to rehearse once prior to the assembly - on a Sunday evening - and that's all the time we needed. We also really enjoyed the commeraderie. So what would we do with our Sunday night now? TV, Movie, Bowling?

  That's interesting. In our neighborhood we just started a Neighborhood Watch, and I'm the block captain. The day after our meeting last week, we had a guy pounding on our door about 1 p.m. who was selling Kirby vacuums. So I sent out an alert to the people in my "block" about a guy in a white van and another neighbor called back to say that there were actually two more inside the van. The following day there some guys selling asphalt paving, and another block captain sent out the alert. It's quite rare that our area ever get sales people because we live in the country. That got me thinking...when the JW's go through area, I hope they will all be reported. Even though I never think of JW's being dangerous, it's very possible that "fake" JW's could case the area for the purpose of burglary or worse. I plan to report any "JW's" that I don't recognize. I also got the following email:

  "Just a reminder to that "No Soliciting" within our county without permission from the townships. If they cannot produce documentation then contact us so they can a first warning or very large fine for violating this order. Most businesses know that."

  I suppose the JW's are exempt from this?

  I remember thinking...I've gone this far, even though I suspect it's not the truth, I can't give up now. Then it occurred to me--it will never get easier. Better do something about it now.

  Clyde has a friend who is 86 years old, in a nursing home and knows it's not the truth, but he couldn't give it up Now he's miserable. At least Clyde goes to visit him regularly which is more than 99.9% of the witnesses do.

  "Come Be My Follower" - Christendom is bad for sponsoring charities and feeding the poor - what?

  i just got the "come be my follower" book and am shocked at their illustration on page 186. maybe i'm more shocked that at one time i would have accepted this warped reasoning.. first they quote jesus at matt.

  7:21-23: "'lord, lord, did we not...perform many powerful works in your name?

  ' and yet then i will confess to them: i never knew you!

  I remember a woman in the d2d work who asked why JW's don't do anything to help the community. I pointed out that in a way we do--we have helped a lot of people break free of drug and alcohol addiction. Later it dawns on me that other churches could say the same but most of them do much much more. I saw an article in a local paper about a bunch of church members who got together on a Saturday morning and cleaned up the yard of an older couple and washed their windows. The witnessses might think of doing something like that - but after they're done with their Saturday morning magazine work, they have to take care of their own needs. I remember an ex-elder from another congregation who told us he was removed as an elder because he didn't put enough emphasis on door to door. He had actually organized a group to cut firewood for an older couple so they could heat their home--but this took the brothers away from the ministry.
