I just thought of something. The Studies in the Scriptures "The Time is at Hand" was written in 1916. This summer our district conventions them is "Deliverance at Hand." Could the fact that it is now 100 years from 1916 be significiant?

And what about performing a legitimate service, such as delivering mail everywhere in a community, including places that promote wrong practices?
It doesn't come out and say directly that a JW mail carrier should not deliver mail to a church, but it sure does hint at it. So would a consciencious JW be influenced to give up his job if he has a church located on his mail route?

I recently came into possession of some old WT volumes. Was interested in the 1938 issues as that was the year that they became a full "theocracy."
Most of the Letters from readers are addressed to "Brother Rutherford." Here are some gems. There are many more
P. 192: "We, the Birmingham (England) company of Jehovah's witnesses wish to declare our allegiance to Jehovah and to the Society as His channel in providing "meat in due season" and instructions in preaching the Kkingdom message.
P. 160: The resolution adopted by the company publishers as Calgary is as follows: ...."We are in full harmony with the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society and recognize it as the Lord's channel for feeding his people and directing his work now in the earth.".......
Almost all the letters that are addressed to Rutherford have expressions of gratitude, thankfulness, and allegiance to The Society, the organization, even to Rutherford himself.

I attended a JW funeral in 2003. The sister's brother-in-law (a former elder) conducted the funeral and it was at a funeral home. He did a pretty good job. Although he talked some about her "hope", he also had some non-jw relatives come up and share their memories of the deceased. However, at the end of the discourse, he did something unprecedented at a witness funeral. He had a non-jw friend come up and sing the "Lord's Prayer." She did a beautiful job. All of a sudden an elder and his wife toward the back of the room stood up and walked out, followed by about ten other elders and their wives. One even went back for a moment to pick his umbrella up off the floor and went back out. The personnel at the funeral home were really disturbed at this exodus. I and a few other people I knew were disgusted.
The deceased had a nephew who was DF'd. I found out that at the service meeting there was a special talk on what to do if a disfellowshipped person showed up at the reception after the funeral. In the neighboring congregation, they didn't have the talk so one of the elder's wives called up all the publishers to tell them what they were supposed to do if he showed up. Well they got lucky. The DF'd nephew's wife delivered a baby the night before and so they did not attend.

Are Public Talks Really Public?
by Blueblades inwhat would the watchtower say to that?
notice that no public talks are shown on their official site.
ever wonder why public talks are not really public.

The WT do like 'interested ones' to attend, but it is not true that the door is open to all. Kingdom Halls are private places, not public, and the body of Elders can deny access to anyone they want. On occasion that's what they do.
How can you say that a Kingdom Hall is private, not public? I've never heard of them being able to stop anyone from attending. I would think that they would even have to by law.

I'm amazed at most of the responses. I actually thought the opposite. I remember years ago that the only thing mentioned about the deceased was the day of birth and the date of death and the survivors. After that, it was just about the hope of the resurrection.
More recently I have heard more eulogy--in fact one of the witnesses even criticized that some of the funerals had too much eulogizing. My mother died in 2002. Previously I handed the speaker a 4-page biography about her life hoping that he would use it during the funeral discourse. He did spend quite a bit about her life even adding tidbits about his own observations. I was very pleased. I'll admit that toward the last he did spend some time on the hope that she had, though I think it was appropriate.

I remember the public talks also when they were truly "public." We did not own Kingdom Halls in those days, and our congregation would often target an outlying village, rent a room maybe above a police station or township hall, and they would canvas the area passing out personalized handbills with the location and the name of the speaker. I heard that once they actually had a meeting at a park.
I was young then, but I do remember that we actually did get people to come to the public talk.
