The world is neither more violent or more corrupt than in previous centuries, but it is easier for information about abuses to "leak out", so we hear about these things much more than our ancestors would have heard. For a good idea of what 19th century city life was like, see "Gangs of New York", hardly a golden age.

it made me think, the jws are always saying how bad things are now and that they are just getting worse.

If you could create a new canon - what books/ writings would you include?
by Qcmbr inok so the bible is a work of the early roman church - if you could add any books to a new canon of 'scripture' what would you add - would you take anything out?

i think i'd take out song of soloman.

I'm thinking that "Cosmos" and other books by Carl Sagan, would provide a vastly better insight into the history of the Universe, history of the Earth, and humanities place in the interconnected web of life than does Genesis.

JW friends of mine in Rockport, Texas, used to have a small gathering over for dinner, after which we would sit around watching the celebration on TV and sip champagne. No party hats or horns though, and no one kissed anyone else at the stroke of midnight : (

No birthday celebrations allowed, but graduation party is OK?
by gaiagirl inthings that make you go "hmmmmm": just learned that an elder i know living near waco, texas is hosting a graduation party for his son.
don't remember ever reading of any faithful christian in the bible ever having such a party.
and to think, all that honor and attention will be focused on a mere human being instead of yhwh.....

Sorry for the delayed reply, the graduation is from high school, not from college. However, the graduate in question is considering some form of "higher" education, as he realizes that his career prospects are limited. His parents are actually being supportive of this line of thinking.

The Only True Church
by danielweatherlee in.
does god have a true church on the earth today?yes, and i will reveal it.it is the free will baptist church, which is true in every sense.they preach jesus, they study god's word correctly and rightly divide the word of truth.they are not led by a distant leader, they are led by their local leader chosen by god.if the sign out front doesn't say free will baptist then you are in the wrong church.look for that sign, and then you've found the right church.

In keeping with the spirit of this thread..."My only point of disagreement with Baptist teachings is that, during actual baptism, they don't hold them under nearly long enough" : )

What are some Bible contradictions that JWs can't reconcile?
by marked ini remember reading in the reasoning book about how to approach someone at the door who said the bible was full of contradictions.
one of the answers was "many say the bible's full of contradictions but no one's been able to show me an example of one.".
so, what are some examples that jws would have no real canned answer to?.

The account in Gen 2:5-7 reads as follows: "Now there was as yet no bush of the field found in the earth, and no vegetation of the field was as yet sprouting because Jehovah God had not made it rain upon the earth, and there was no man to cultivate the ground. But a mist would go up from the earth and it watered the entire surface of the ground. And Jehovah God proceeded to form the man out of dust from the ground, and to blow into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man came to be a living soul. This states quite clearly, and in contradiction to the account in Genesis 1, that before the creation of humans there were no plants.

Looking in the night sky, one can readily observe clouds of gas where stars have in the past exploded (such as the Crab Nebulae). In addition, some stars have exploded WHILE observers were watching, and burned very brightly for a few days or weeks, then faded away. So, it is not unreasonable to conclude that this will one day happen to the star we call our Sun. It doesn't take much imagination to know the fate of the nearer planets when that day arrives. By the time that arrives, our descendants will hopefully have learned to travel to other worlds, so it does not necessarily mean the end of life, merely that this particular planet will not be our home any longer.

Genesis chapter 1:11-26 says that green vegetation was created BEFORE humans (also before the Sun and Moon and stars). Then at Genesis 2:4, an entirely different account starts over: Genesis chapter 2:5-7 says that humans were created BEFORE vegetation! To sum up, neither account agrees with what is known to science, and the accounts also disagree with one another.
