As a JW were you ever counseled about clothes you wore, or lack thereof ?
by flipper inthought this could get interesting discussing experiences.
i for one was trying to reach out for ministerial servant again in the early 90's , had been one before, and was assigned to carry the microphones one meeting.
had an elder call me in the back room and say , " brother flipper, i noticed looking down towards your shoes that you are wearing white socks today.

[Fluff] Build a better human
by Paralipomenon insomething fun for the atheists and theists alike!
given both ideologies classify humans as the top of the food chain, there are some attributes in the animal kingdom that are much better to ours.
piecing together all the best attributes, let's build a better human!

Here's one that might solve with overpopulation: Make humans sterile by default, fertile only when BOTH partners eat some food which activates their capacity to reproduce. In this manner, people could be physically close without fearing unwanted pregnancies. (Actually part of a future human society in the book "Engine Summer").

Most members of this forum are familiar with the cartoon character Betty Boop. She began in the early 1930's, with a very short dress, a garter, and visible cleavage. Her adventures often dealt directly with her sexuality. Sometimes other characters would attempt to peek while she changed clothes, or her very anatomically correct shilouette would be seen while she passed in front of a light source. In one cartoon, she danced wearing only a grass skirt and a lei, which barely covered her nipples. Sometimes characters would pressure her to have sex with them, in another cartoon a character whispered in her ear what he wanted, while his hand stroked her thigh. She refused and said "you can't have my Boop-oop-a-doop". Betty was never promiscuous, but always provocative. Around 1934, pressure from the Hayes office (which wrote the movie ratings code), led to a longer skirt, no more visible cleavage, and less provocative innuendo. The series ended in 1939. I'm curious if Watchtower magazines of the era mentioned her by name, or cartoons and movies in general as bad entertainment.

Remember the Movie "Raiders of the Lost Ark"...
by alias in... towards the end when the bad guys opened the ark and indiana and his lady were tied to the pole, the spiritual unleashing that came out and killed, no, melted all the bad guys?
i was probably 9 or 10 when that movie came out and it literally scared the cheese out of me in the theater.
i was so glad to be a jw at the time because i felt like i just witnessed the power of god and saw what was going to happen to opposers when judgment day came.

I remember during the scene when Indy was confronted by the knife-twirler, then shot him, how everyone in the theatre cheered and clapped. Apparantly, there was some anti-middle-eastern sentiment in the audience.

Here's a LOT more than you probably ever wanted to know about Unitarians : ) Unitarians have always been non-Trinitarian. This is what the name "Unitarian" refers to. In the 4th century, Arius was condemned as a heretic for teaching that god was not a Trinity. Arius was one of the characters in a movie titled "King Arthur", starring Clive Owen and Keira Knightly, just a few years ago. In 16th century Poland, Faustus Socinus led a Unitarian movement, and Francis David led similar movements in Transylvania and Hungary. Both of these movements encountered persecution, and refugees from these countries travelled to Holland in 1619 and founded the Remonstrants. John Biddle introduced Unitarianism to England, and Joseph Priestly was an early Unitarian writer and scientist. In the United States, Kings Chapel in Boston adopted a Unitarian liturgy in 1785, and Joseph Priestly came to the U.S. from England in 1794. Until 1825, Unitarianism was more of a school-of-thought which existed within other denominations, however at that time, William Ellery Channing organized the American Unitarian Association, and Unitarianism became a denomination in its own right. Unitarianism was and is very popular in New England. Russell would have at least been aware of them. In the early 1960's, recognizing that they shared many beliefs in common, Unitarian and Universalist churches merged, so are now called Unitarian Universalist, or UU for short.

Did you ever play 'WATCHTOWER HOOKY' ?
by AK - Jeff inlong before we 'figured it out', i think we were tiring of the whole routine and demands, though we could not admit such openly, even to each other for the most part.
but i recall occasionally 'oversleeping', and in some cases i had woke early enough but just intentionally let time go by and got up 'running late'.
our family 'tradition' was to stop for breakfast at a local restuarant on the way to the kh.

I was taking evening classes, and missed many Tuesday and Thursday meetings. I can truthfully say I enjoyed Trigonometry MUCH more than anything I ever heard at the KH.

Paedo cases in the org and pioneers.......
by jambon1 inhave you ever sat at a convention or assembly and heard an experience from the platform about how some asswipe pioneer received a bundle of cash for their car repairs, "just in time to keep going in the pioneer service".
or some other form of material advantage, credited to god as the provider.. now, let's for a wee minute, assume that these were actual blessings from god.
he actually took action.

I've heard the similar "double-sided" reasoning from a JW I know. He will speak about an attractive woman by saying something like "Jehovah really knew what he was doing when he made her". I heard him say this once and said "So Jehovah screwed up on woman who are not beautiful in your eyes?" and he mumbled something about "Its not Jehovahs fault if they have bad genes".

Hole in space found
by MadTiger innot a black hole, which has a densely-packed mass at the center, but a huge void of nothing, not even dark matter: .
void in space!.
home of the divine?
-
gaiagirl
Certainly NOT the residence of the divine, as the Watchtower has already clearly stated that Jehovah lives in the Pleiades cluster.
