What JWD means to me...some reflections, and your opinions

when i signed up on jwd last summer, i was a total, total internet newbie.

i'd never been on a db before, never been in a chat room before, and didn't have a clue what im was.

I think this place is amazing!

It is a mine of information - you can find out so much stuff that is otherwise hidden. I lurked for a while and had to pluck up the courage to post, but now I love it. The people on here are wonderful and, whatever the query, someone always seems to have the answer or can point you in the right direction.

The majority of JWs I know would love to be able to say what is on their mind, voice doubts, slag off the elders or whatever, without fear of being labelled a bad associate. It's just such a relief to know there are others who feel the same as I do - and I always thought I was the only one because nobody in the KH would ever say anything bad about the organisation. In the end you start feeling that you are the one with the problem and you sink deeper into depression (at least I did) I know now that this is because of the fear it instils in us - I am so grateful to Simon for this place - it is a real haven and I think it has just about saved my sanity (I hope!)

I am still a JW married to a JW. He is a 'proper' (for want of a better word) JW and I am just going through the motions. I am irregular at meetings - haven't been for a while, and I never go on field service any more. Having said that, I still have doubts about whether this is the 'truth' and whether I am making a mistake in leaving, but then I think of the horrible way they treat people by DFing and DAing and then I think it can't be true.

Still pretty confused at the moment, but hopefully things will settle down soon. Whenever I think I have gotten things staight in my mind, my husband will talk to me about some point from the meeting and then I get confused again. He has a great knowledge of the Bible and can run rings around me.

Hi Hotdog,

I used to run psychometric tests for a company I worked for. It's just a means of measuring your personality, stengths, weaknesses, skills and abilities etc. The ones I used to run covered personality profile, career profile, spelling, speed & accuracy, mechanical reasoning, numerical reasoning, logical reasoning, spatial reasoning and verbal reasoning.

They're nothing to be afraid of - the tests they use depends on the type of job you are going for. You can't really prepare for them as such, but if mathematics is involved in the job, you could brush up on the basics of maths such as fractions, decimals etc in case you have a numerical test.

I don't really have an awful lot of faith in the personality/strengths/weaknesses profile because a lot of people will give the answers that are expected of them to make themselves sound good. Also, you can learn what type of answers are the best and what employers want to hear etc so the test results can be flawed.

You can't really cheat with the aptitude tests though, because you are either good at maths, mechanics, spelling etc, or you're not.

Although this guy isn't a Hollywood actor or anything, but a comedian, he has got to be one of the all-time great character actors - RONNIE BARKER!

I used to find it hard to believe that the guy in 'The Two Ronnies' was the same guy who played Fletch in 'Porridge' and also the same guy who played Arkwright in 'Open All Hours'. He also played Clarence which was another masterpiece. This man could change dramatically for whatever role was given him. I think I am his number one fan!

I also love David Jason - he is another guy that is just so cute! All the cute guys are short - maybe it's just me???

Sorry to go completely off the point - but I stand by my man - Ronnie is the best actor!

Thanks for your thoughts. I have never thought of calling God another name - something personal to me. Maybe I am just dumb or too easily led, but I would have been afraid to do that in the past as I thought it was blasphemous. And as for being 'too far gone', you are right, it is the influence of the WTS coming out. I have been a misfit for so long, seeing everyone else in the KH doing so well and being so spiritual when I felt numb inside. I was so convinced there was something defective about my personality because I felt nothing when prayers were said at meetings or even when I prayed. I really need to start all over again.

I remember wondering about this - an article in the mags once said that some JWs during WW2 hid their mags and typewriter in the oven (I think?) and the Nazis looked in the oven but didn't see them???? And all because the JWs called on Jehovah to help.

I used to think - why doesn't it work for me? Whenever I pray, I feel nothing, as if I am just talking to myself. I use the name Jehovah but my prayers are still ignored. I have called to Jehovah to help me on many occasions but still nothing.

I was interested to read what you said, czarofmischief, that using Jehovah's name kept the bullies at bay. That's such a strange experience. I wish I could pray like that. Maybe I am just too far gone to be helped.

I love Maggie Smith - first saw her in 'The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie' when she was fantastic.

I just love AL Pacino - he is so brilliant.

John Hurt is very underestimated - he is also very cute!

And Donald Sutherland.....well.....those eyes just get me every time!

by giving the topic its own thread i'm hoping someone can give me the definitive answer............(but i'm not holding my breath!)..

right, my point is, if we are made in god's image that means we reflect his (good) qualities.

It is so refreshing for me to able to voice my doubts about a loving God without fear of being hauled into 'The Back Room'

I have always felt angry when I think about all the heartache in the world, and God does nothing about it.

To be told that everything will be alright one day, and we'll all be in a paradise, is just not good enough. If this life is not that important, but leads to a better life, why do some people have the luxury of having it so easy, while others live a life full of crap? Why are some babies born to die within minutes? What have they accomplished? They didn't even get a chance. Why do some people (a minority) have everything on a plate while the majority of the world lives in poverty? It all makes me so angry. Is God having a laugh, or what?

Why Aren't Jehovah's Witnesses Allowed To Freely Express Themselves?

it's a simple fact.

jw's cannot freely express themselves.

they can't freely tell another about a doubt or a question that they might have for fear they could be exposed to the elders.

I am fairly new to this board and have been following this thread with great interest.

I am glad you have stopped putting BA, MA etc after your name because it is really embarrassing.

I have a degree like many on this board but have always thought that people who felt the need to tell eveyone what they had studied by adding silly letters to the end of their name must have a big problem with self-esteem.

I just wanted to comment on one point you made which made me angry.

You said "All Witnesses are encouraged to ask questions and can find answers by means of the Index, local elders and a letter to the Society. If there is a contentious matter then one can write and leave the matter to dealt with."

Do you have ANY IDEA what happens when you approach the elders with questions or doubts? I find it hard to believe that you are a JW if you think it is that easy. Not only have I been 'marked' for questioning the JWs unscriptural practices (such as shunning - you know - the 'loving' practice of making someone come to the KH when the meeting has started, sit at the back being ignored, then leave as soon as the meeting is ended because they are so contaminated they might as well be lepers) but they are outraged if anyone dares question anything, particularly if you are a woman! I want to be able to discuss scriptures and express what they mean to me at meetings. I don't want to be forced to parrot what's in the paragraphs - that isn't teaching anybody anything. Why don't JWs have meetings where everyone is free to express themselves and voice any doubts etc? What is the WTS afraid of? If they have the truth, no amount of doubting or questioning will make it any less true. If what they teach is from God, then nobody will be able to make this organisation crumble. Why can't we have open and free discussion?

To answer the main question on this thread, JWs CANNOT EVER freely express themselves because they are too damn scared!
