there was a recent post stating to the effect that fds was simply a parable.. i always remember the debates held with christian students, about whether something was a parable or an illustration.. another thread has that issue.. regardless of whether the word parable or illustration can be applied to the fds, i have a question.. both the aid and insight books have a lengthy article on illustrations.. the article lists 30 of jesus' prominent illustrations.. however, the fds is not one of the 30 (same in aid book).. why not?.

Regardless of whether the word parable or illustration can be applied to the FDS, I have a question.

Both the Aid and Insight books have a lengthy article on Illustrations.

The article lists 30 of Jesus' prominent illustrations.

However, the FDS is not one of the 30 (same in Aid book).

Why not?

Witnesses use the word "illustration" instead of parable.

They defend this use in the Insight book thus:

The Greek expression pa·ra·bo·leʹ (literally, a placing beside or together) has a wider latitude of meaning than the English “proverb” or “parable.” However, “illustration” covers a wide range that can include “parable” and, in many cases, “proverb.” A “proverb” embodies a truth in expressive language, often metaphorically, and a “parable” is a comparison or similitude, a short, usually fictitious, narrative from which a moral or spiritual truth is drawn.
That the Scriptures use the word pa·ra·bo·leʹ with a wider meaning than the English “parable” is shown at Matthew 13:34, 35, where Matthew points out that it had been foretold concerning Jesus Christ that he would speak with “illustrations” (NW), “parables” (KJ, RS). Psalm 78:2, quoted by Matthew in this connection, refers to “a proverbial saying” (Heb., ma·shalʹ), and for this term the Gospel writer employed the Greek word pa·ra·bo·leʹ. As the literal meaning of the Greek term implies, the pa·ra·bo·leʹ served as a means of teaching or communicating an idea, a method of explaining a thing by ‘placing it beside’ another similar thing. (Compare Mr 4:30.) Most English translations simply use the anglicized form “parable” to render the Greek term. However, this translation does not serve to convey the full meaning in every instance.

Any Letterman Fans

not many shows left.. was a fan from his nbc days when he had a lot of innovation.. no question, he has a quick mind, which to me, is a key to comedy.. a distinct memory was awakening my poor pre-teen daughter when dave was back on the air after his heart surgery.. no matter what, is a changing of the guard (if only the wt could do the same)..

So, a plane crash lands (uh, hard lands ??? ).

No question, everyone is naturally in panic mode - get me the F out of here.

Mr. Earle says to himself, not out of, "Geez, if I do this, if I help this person with their groceries, if I shovel their sidewalk while in service, blah, blah, blah." says, not, this person who has lived long enough, but, THIS IS A HUMAN BEING, who needs help, and does what a fellow human being does what is needed.

Apologist Wanted - or Play Apologist - Jonah, Nineveh, Repentance

the great fish aside, what i could never wrap my head around was the repentance of nineveh.. a city of 140,000 heard one lunatic "prophet" who warned repent or die and the entire city from the king to the least repented in ashes.. insight says this was during jeroboam ii - 844 bc to 803 bc.. and yet, scant decades later, in 740 bc, god used these, the ultimate of cruel, sadistic barbarians to destroy israel.. 1. why would god ask this depraved city to repent, and not ask others, including sodom and gomorrah, to repent?.

2. can one honestly believe that, with god as the one reading all of their hearts, all of 140,000 people sincerely repented?.

3. insight describes the assyrians, in 740 bc, as being of unparalleled cruelty.

The real point of the story is the contrast between Jonah's grief about the death of a tree and his disappointment that thousands of Assyrians are not to be destroyed after all. It is a tale about compassion for humanity, even for your enemies.

Which is really the point, isn't it?

Jonah felt sorry for a plant, but not for 140,000 people. Wicked, cruel beyond imagination, people. Spared. But, meanwhile we (JW's) "witness" to 8 billion people, the vast majority of whom lead better lives than said average JW, and tell them to leave their "worldly" lifestyle, join us by sacrificing your money, your career, your education, your future, and your family, and, hopefully, this loving God of ours will also spare your life.

I saw and heard something in a Kingdom hall I thought I would never witness!

when i was a kid i would hear religious songs on tv and start sining them... not knowing they were church songs... one day i started singing the hallelujah song (not sure the exact name of the song) my father quickly gave me a hard slap on the mouth and said if i ever sang that song again he would take his belt off and beat my butt until it was red!.

well fast forward 30 years..... the public speaker was missing today and so tv.jw>org to the rescue.... instead they decided to play the new video about the last hundred years since 1914.. instantly the hall was filled with the exact same song i was punished for!

yes a church song filled the hall for almost 5 minutes as we watch br.

My reading of this, if written in 1908 AD, is that Armageddon had already commenced by 1908.
