  there's something i've always wondered about- how do the elders decide when a disfellowshipped person is "sorry enough" for their sin to be reinstated?

  for instance, if someone is immediately repentant for something they've done, even turning themselves in, and they still get disfellowshipped for a set period of time.

  how is this scriptural?

  I remember one day my mom and my aunt (both JWs) were over to visit me and they were talking about the latest "disfellowshippings and reinstatements". I just sat there listening curiously, wondering how such gossip could be considered "Christian". My cousin (my JW aunt's daughter) got busted for sneaking to the prom. My mom told me about it. I mentioned it in conversation to my aunt, and she blasted my mother for telling me about it. I'm family for crying out loud! I now know they were trying to keep the whole thing hush hush, so my cousin would not get reproved or bring reproach on their good name. Give me a break. Poor kid.

  My main question is, how do they decide how long you need to be punished before they consider reinstating you? I've heard stories about people trying and trying to get reinstated. My grandma, who was DFd for smoking, continued to unrepentantly smoke for years. Then she found out she was dying of cancer. She died within 3 months. They were so kind to reinstate her just before her death. I just wonder how they decide you are sorry enough, or how they even believe they have that right?

  By public reproof, you mean they publicly reprimand you? Do they get specific about what you did?

  yes, i have many times asked this of my self.

  after leavening the witness's its been hard, i think ewww i am no good cause unless i am attending the kingdom hall i won't have gods grace and he won't hear my prayers or anything.

  boy they sure had me, being raised a witness sticks with you long after you leave in ways you think it never would and in ways you just can't can't flush.

  God is everywhere, and He will hear your prayers wherever you are if you are sincerely seeking Him. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. He is not in a building or organization. Just keep praying, He will lead you where you need to go. I know it sounds too easy, but I know from experience. I was living at home with my JW mother and my Bible Student father, and God did not choose to reach me through either of them. Read the Bible (not the NWT!), and don't let anyone tell you it is not written for you or that you need someone else to tell you what it says.

  one of my wife's best friends talked to her yesterday about "the truth".

  she wanted to know if they could get together to "talk".

  after some conversation, my wife asked her if she thought all the "prophecies" in the isaiah book seemed reasonable.

  That would be assuming that Jesus was a mere man- another WT teaching. If you believe He is God, then you have a DIRECT relationship with Him. I know that the trinity is a difficult thing for a lot of people to make sense of, I had a very hard time with it myself. I grew up Bible Student (the ancestors of the JWs) and was taught that Jesus was created. I'm not trying to start a big debate, just stating my opinion. And I know this is not a thread about the trinity, so I will leave it at that. I have a very different "illustration" so to speak of what a relationship with God looks like.
