just want everyone to know that i am doing ok. those of you who have expressed concern that you have not heard from me in a while, well, thanks, but it hasn?t been that long.

my last update was either yesterday or thursday.

i feel terribly overwhelmed at present.

I've been following your story, I'm glad your daughter is on the road to recovery. I think you wanting to help other JW children is an AWESOME idea. I have 5 young cousins stuck in the cult, and I worry about what will happen when they screw up like normal kids do and their parents turn their back on them. Two of them have already left home, and I worry about how they will function in the real world when they've been taught to fear it all of their lives. I have so much respect for what you are doing for your girls. Please continue to keep us updated.

Holidays and kids once you are out of the Org

my son was born after i faded.

his dad and i always have had christmas (father never was jw).

we celebrate his birthday and we do easter.

I was never a JW, but I still have a hard time getting that "warm fuzzy" feeling about Christmas or Easter. They are both so commercialized, the religious meaning is kind of lost. And my family is so dysfunctional, it just is not a fun time.

I have good memories of Christmas when I was a kid. The funny thing is, most of them of are of spending time at my Grandma's house and she was a JW. She never gave us presents, and didn't decorate, but it was always so nice to see all my aunts, uncles, and cousins. She died 14 years ago, and the holidays just aren't fun anymore. I mostly miss all my fun relatives- they have either died or been sucked into the cult themselves and are much more rigid than my Grandma was about family get-togethers on holidays.

Birthdays are cool, though. I don't care much about mine, but I had a great time celebrating my son's first birthday. I don't think there's anything wrong with letting someone you love know you are happy they've been with you another year. And I don't need an occasion to buy him presents, I spoil him rotten all year long

I MADE A SCENE AT THE KINGDOM HALL REMODEL TODAY

it was getting close to noon and elese decided to give her mother a call to let her know she was ready to be picked up.

sara said she had to stop by the kingdom hall to drop off some ice for the brothers doing the remodeling.

Kingdom Hall Spankings

most meetings i went to, children were brought to the washrooms in the back to be disciplined.

often i could hear a child yell or cry due to the spanking given by the parent.

people in the hall would have that look on their face meaning that it was alright to discipline a child by spanking him.

I saw a comment in one of the posts about JWs not having nursery or Sunday school for kids, saying "In Jesus' day, the children listened in the synagogue". What scriptural backing do they have for that? My mom gave me that excuse before, too, but no scripture to back it up. Is there any? Why should children sit through a bunch of stuff they don't understand? Wouldn't it make more sense to teach them on their own level, so they might actually learn something and (gasp) enjoy themselves?

My mom is always talking about how "bad" my little cousin behaves at some of the meetings. My son (her grandson) is the same age, and one of the most energetic (yeah, hyper) kids you'll meet. My son and I are not JW, so I ask her, "well, do you think _______ would be able to sit through a 2 hour meeting? Does that make him "bad"?" This shut her right up, as she wouldn't dream of calling her grandson bad. It is disgusting the standards they try to hold those poor kids to.

Did I go too far / How far would you go to protect your partner ?

had a bit of an altercation this weekend... my nephew in law attempted to assault my wife..... this is the background:.

i have a deaf mute nephew with a personality disorder.

he's 32, and still lives with his mother and her fiancee.

I have a similar situation in my family. My younger brother is 29 years old, has a closed head injury, and is mildly bipolar. He has a hard time controlling his temper, and has gotten violent with my parents and with me. My Dad often excuses this behavior, because he *can't* control it. I know that he has problems with impulse control, but I also think he needs to see that there are consequences for his actions. My parents are in their early 60's, so they are getting too old to have to worry about my idiot brother attacking them.

My husband feels exactly as you do- if my brother ever attacks me in front of him, he will kick his ass. I guess it depends on the person- in my brother's case, he is a total manipulator. He gets away with everything, including not having to work, because he *can't* help it. But he can mooch free meals off my parents and spend all of his money on pot. OK, I'm venting now. But I know exactly how you feel. I don't think you were out of line.

Hooberus, thanks for the link. I've heard some of these things before, but worded differently. I never thought about it that way, but it is true- JWs treat an attack on the WT as an attack on God Himself. If someone attacked my church, I wouldn't take it as an attack on God, because my church is not God. I will definitely keep some of the questions from the link in mind for our next meeting.

Hi unhappywife, and welcome to the board.

Yep, she's coming by herself. That's what I thought too, that it was frowned upon. I told her I was more comfortable talking one-on-one, mostly so I could get her to look at and talk about things that she might not want to with another JW present. I think she regrets agreeing to it now, as she asked if she could bring someone to "explain things better". I politely refused, saying that even if it took longer to understand her explanation, I'd still like to keep it one-on-one.

Thanks for all the replies so far. I have no expectations of seeing this woman leave the org, but I'm hoping somewhere down the line she'll remember some of our discussions. I know from the many stories I've read here that something personal has to happen before a JW starts to have doubts. I'm just planting seeds. I'm just wondering if she really could be more disturbed than she lets on. Thanks again.
