Laying the groundwork for the pedo lawsuits to hit the mainstream news it would seem.

"It's the intent that counts and not the result."
by donny in"it's the intent that counts not the result.".
i have been out of the jw organization for some 22 years now and i sometimes get a reminding jolt out the hoops that some will jump through to make their religion make sense to them.
the first line in this post is what a jw on the street here in salinas told me on saturday when trying to justify the society's history of false prophecies.

the Witnesses were trying to keep alert and stay on the watch versus being asleep at the wheel like the rest of the churches.
Punk of nice, I am still learning how to think critically. could you explain your post and how the hi lighted part is a logical fallacy....?
I'll try my hand at this - there's two problems with this statement. The first, to use a term often heard in the TV lawyer dramas, is that it assumes facts not in evidence. In other words, what evidence is there that the rest of the churches where asleep at the wheel, while the JWs where not? Sure, the JWs where proclaiming the end is nigh, and where thus very alert to the potential comming of the end, but the other churches where in it for the long-haul and turned out to be correct that the end was not so near. Which one was asleep at the wheel?
Additionally, because of the stance JWs take on holidays such as christmas and easter, this falls into the category of special pleading fallacy. The argument for the early JWs is that their intent was to serve god faithfully and zealously and that excuses them from having prophesied falsly (i.e. intent is more important than the truth of the matter). If you then ask why christians are to be condemned for celebrating christmas - an act that they do with the intent of serving god faithfully and zealously, they say because the holiday's origins are pagan and the date isn't even Jesus' birthday. (i.e. the truth of the matter is more important than the intent)
This is a special pleading fallacy because there is a distinction made (in one case it is the intent that matters, in the other case it is the truth that matters) but there is no attempt made to justify why this distinction exists.

He began the talk saying he was going to back it up with scripture. That is why I wondered exactly what scripture!
Liars gonna lie.
He also began by saying he'd back things up with quotes from the publications so if you have a problem with it, take it up with God. So, the publications are therefore the word of god and on equal footing with the bible. Actually, they're more important than the bible - the bible is filled with "old light."

Anthony Morris - AP's in August, 900%, increase, yet decrease in BS's
by berrygerry inthe only video that i've found of tomo is 39:00 minutes long - the ending is missing.. various posts mentioned highlights of the tremendous witness in august, with a 900% increase in ap's, as well as some other magnificent accomplishment that i cannot locate.. then i painfully listened to the video to verify, and at about 38:00, tomo bemoans the downward trend in bible studies.. the best august of all-time, yet downward trend.. looks like the toilet bowl is swirling.. .

I love how the WTS uses statistics:
900% increase in APs for August!- It must be Jehovah's Blessing (TM)
Bible studies are down - You lazy bastards need to get off your asses and work harder!
Not to mention the fact that a large portion of the APs for august where probably appointed men who were heavily pressured into doing it, and didn't make their time. They give the number that signed up, but I'd love to see how many actually made the measly 30 hours.

Were ANY scriptures given to back up the parts that are now being made fun of?
Specifically, the tight pants, colored socks and spanx?
If I remember correctly, the only scripture offered regarding dress/grooming was 1 Timothy 2:9, which is wildly generic and obviously doesn't indicate hard-and-fast rules like he was throwing out.

Well done. Hopefully you've sown some seeds.
On the topic of the thread title, I immediately thought of what happens when you criticise the WTS - the moment you so much as raise a genuine question regarding some teaching or practice your intentions are called into question. You could have a completely valid point, but no - you have a fault-finding attitude or you're trying to draw of followers after yourself. Apparently falsely accusing someone of having bad intentions makes it completely unnecessary to answer their question or counter their criticism.

Thou shalt turn in a dear friend to the elders if he sins in any way (even if he has already corrected his mistake and no one was harmed) and especially of they express any doubts in the validity of 7 geezers' claim that they're God's mouthpiece.

So I asked my wife tonight what she thought of the zone meeting Saturday and she just said "brutal."
I pushed a little more (probably too much) and learned that she thinks that the brothers in bethel have a clearer view of what's wrong than we do because they're so isolated from the world. I didn't much know what to say to that since it's exactly opposite to the conclusion that seems obvious to me. I also learned that I'm "trying to find fault with everything."

Over 1,000,000 in attendance and you are worried about tight pants?
by Separation of Powers inyou know, rarely in the history of the org has a group this large congregated to hear from "mother.
" they incessantly speak of the huge group that met at yankee stadium in 1958...the over 250,000 that congregated to be instructed by jehovah.
but over the weekend, there were over 1,000,000 people excited to hear some type of direction, some type of encouragement, something to help them hang on "just a little longer.".

I have been out for about 12 years and I am afraid I already do not reconise the fomer cult I was in. It makes me really sad that my mom and brother were in that audience listening and taking notes.
I'm still 'in' at the moment, but I can tell you that you could've left 3-4 years ago and you wouldn't recognize what the cult has become.

"Jehovah's spirit is being blocked in the congregation"
by stuckinarut2 inso, how many times have we heard this expression (or a variation of it):.
"jehovah's spirit seems to be blocked here in the congregation...perhaps he is bringing something to light...etc".
it seems that the org often uses this expression, and links it with the "fact" that god wont bless a cong as much,(or at all) if there is "stuff" or "sins" being carried out.. so, why is it then that the cong i am in is experiencing its best years of activity in all aspects?

This was the overall theme of a recent CO talk, all about how HS "flows" from the top down through the organization and we need to make sure not to block the flow. I think there was an analogy made to the roman aqueducts. Super culty when you consider that he was basically telling us that the GB is the source of holy spirit.
