  a scandal is brewing in the uk.

  for many years gangs of asian men engaged in rape and torture of young girls who were in the "so-called" care system.

  it is believed there were around 1,400 victims in north west england, focussed on the town of rotherham.. if reports are to be believed, social workers, police and the cpc knew it was happening and everybody failed to act for one simple reason.

  However, that article must be put into context.

  The 2011 Tottenham riots saw widespread looting and arson - is this a typically British thing to do?

  In recent years, poppy burnings by muslim extremists have happened. Is this a British thing to do?

  Depending on which source is most accurate, between 500 and 1500 muslims have travelled to Syria/Iraq to participate in jihad, beheadings, buying of women slaves and genocide. Are these typically British acts?

  In Britain, we have the Black Police Association and the Muslim Police Association. Is this arrangement British?

  Your favourite dog breed ...?

  in an earlier thread, i mentioned that i wasn't a particularly doggy person but that my parents got a husky last year that i've come to regard as a kind of brother.. huskies superficially resemble wolves and for me it's been fun to compare and contrast husky and wolf behaviour.

  huskies howl but rarely bark, and seem to have a strong prey drive and a strong pack instinct - a nod to their wild cousins.

  this is why i love huskies, i think.. do you have a favourite dog breed and why?.

  i just buried my beloved poddle, little brother.

  he died suddenly.

  i know to most people that is not an important event.

  I'm sorry to hear of your loss and I hope that time heals your wounds.

  I don't really know what else to say. In the past, I've been guilty of dismissing peoples' grief over pets as overindulgance, sentimentality for its own sake, etc. I've never really been a doggy person but my parents bought a husky last year and I have to say, dogs are loyal to their owners. I've come to regard him as almost a brother.

  In time, do you plan on getting another dog?

  it was against war with France that Britishness first defined itself - perhaps, or maybe England just happened to win that particular war. Was the war you had in mind before the uniting of Scotland and Engand? The Scots and French have formed alliances against England in the past, I think.

  it was via the formation of the British empire that Britishness sought to identify itself - no, British identity already existed. The Empire sought to force-feed Britishness to aboriginal peoples.

  The British Isles consist of Britain and Ireland, therefore Britishness/British culture is made up of Northern Irish, English, Scottish and Welsh cultures. Simples.

  I don't think British culture is 'unfixed' but it sure is flexible.

  i struggle to write good academic essays.

  i'm never happy with the result of my labours.

  i've had a few hds, but still feel they lack something.. for some months, i have been pondering why i have this problem, and the realisation is becoming clear that my problem is the result of having my brain washed clean by jesus for 40 years (my period of enslavement to the wt cause).

  The english have many stories about knights fighting dragons.

  Dragons were dinosaurs. Perhaps dragon myths originate with extant taxa, such as crocodiles, monitor lizards and pythons?

  Well spotted, BloodyHotdogs.

  If you look closely, inbetween the mammoth and the ark there looks like a Loch Ness monster or 'Nessie' in the 78 version. This also has been removed.

  T-rex or not the whole idea of a literal, biblical flood is absolutely ridiculous - I find very difficult to believe that some people still believe in it.

  Ruby - I think your interesting stat is also encouraging.

  I agree in part about ethnic minorites identifying closely with Britishness - perhaps I should have stated 'recent immigrants from rural Pakistan ...' in my previous post. Older immigrants certainly identify with Britishness, as can be seen in the Indian/Pakistani community's stressing of education + good career, and also in the straight-laced, old-fashioned attitude of older generations of immigrants from Africa and the Caribbean.

  My gripe lies with recent immigration policy. John Major's Tory government were quite soft and hopeless concerning immigration, from what I remember. Then New Labour really took dumb immigration policy to new levels of idiocy plus added multiculturalism into the mix - a disastrous combination.

  As a result we have FGM, polygamy and heightened terrorist threats that sensible immigration and policy on culture would probably not have allowed.

  You seemed you've answered your own question re what is Britishness/British culture - it's made up of Northern Irish, English, Scottish and Welsh culture.
