In the days of Russell and Rutherford it was used commonly. It was also convenient for them, when asked where they got the money for this building or that building, to say, "It was donated by a "friend".

In Irving Texas in the 70's the elders that I knew all seemed super nice and caring in the Hall. But, outside the Hall was another matter. I worked for one of the elders and I got an earful. Not trying to eavesdrop, but the brothers talked very openly about things that they really shouldn't have. These elders could not stand one another. From what I overheard, they argued and fought over all types of matters. Words like "Horses Ass" and "Bowel Movement" (one of the elders initials) are just a couple of terms I remember being thrown about. A couple of them eventually moved away to other congregations. Of course, they are all dead now.
I moved to California for awhile and when I came back to Texas an elder that I knew in CA had also moved to Texas, to my very congregation. He did not like what he had moved into. Many years later I was living in Arizona. I walked into the KH there and who did I meet? The California elder! He didn't remember me but I sure remembered him. I said, "Yeah, I remember you from Irving TX!" Man, the smile disappeared from his face immediately, and he said, "That's a chapter of my life I would just as soon forget!"

Lets list everything that has pagan origins!!
by song19 ini have a feeling i am going to have to explain to my jw folks why i have decided to allow my children to participate in holidays at school.
theyll probably be wondering too why i will get together with our non jw family for the holidays.. .
we know jws avoid holidays because of their pagan origins.

drewcoul,
I'm not Jamie, but I can tell you that from what I've read that lipstick would indicate that the prostitute specialized in performing oral sex. I don't imagine they would mind smearing their lipstick if the price was right, though!

Your most memorable Kingdom Hall meeting disruptions!
by easyreader1970 ini remember about twenty years ago some teenagers were caught fornicating in one of the additional schools.
the schools were downstairs, essentially separated from the rest of the kh.
they weren't just happened upon, though.

Back in the 1970's, I don't remember the subject of apostates being harped upon too much. I had heard of them being mentioned occasionally, but never gave too much thought to the subject.
In the fall of 1978, I was in Irving TX at the KH in the back "secondary" part of the Hall, (there was a partition between the main auditorium and the back), where we were having our Tuesday Book Study. The elder who usually conducted was not able to be there that night so he asked a younger "brother" to fill in for him. This younger "brother" was probably in his mid to late 30's and seemed to be a bit "peculiar"(how peculiar do you have to be to be labeled as peculiar by a bunch of Jehovahs Witnesses?)
Well, I was the reader for the night, so I was sitting in a chair right beside this "peculiar brother", let's just call him Brother P. I guess there were about 20 to 25 people in attendance that night, remember this is 3 years after 1975. About 10 to 15 minutes into the study, Brother P began to expound on the subject in the book, getting away from the actual content. Then he pointedly said that Jehovahs spirit does not work upon the individual JW's but only upon the Faithful and Discreet slave. We could only benefit from Jehovahs spirit by staying close to the F&DS.
Well, that set off quite a heated argument as some of the "brothers" actually stood up and telling him he was full of ----! (Now, actually, in hind sight, what he was saying was TRUE! That is what is taught). But these "brothers", and one "brother" in particular, Brother S, were now engaged in a full blown argument, I thought it was about to break into fisticuffs!
Brother S slammed his book down on the floor, screaming "You can't sit there and tell me that Jehovahs spirit doesn't work directly with me!!" then stormed out the door!
I was just sitting there not knowing what to do, but after Brother S left I just looked over to Brother P and asked, "You want me to go ahead and read the paragraph now?"
The meeting came to a premature end that night. Later I spoke with the elder who normally conducted the study. He said that he had already spoke with Brother P and that Brother P apologized, feeling that everyone was actually trying to say the same thing, there was just a big misunderstanding. I told him what I saw and that there was no misunderstanding, but I was told, "Yes it was, now drop it".

Hortensia,
Ooh, what a beautiful part of the country! Used to live near the Silicon Valley back in the late 70's. I'm too far away now, maybe next year! Enjoy!!

too nice and polite
by Phaedra inanyone finding themselves being labeled as "too nice" or "polite" after being a lifelong jw and integrating into the "new world" of realistic beings?.

When I saw the title of your post I thought you were asking for me personally. Yes, people of "the world" think I am kinda strange, in a too nice and polite way. Back in the days of when I was a Witness, the folks at the Kingdom Hall thought of me as being too "worldly", a weirdo. I don't fit in at either place.
I have to often remind myself that people rarely like people that they don't understand or that they can't control.

My mother would always buy a big turkey and all of the usual foods that go with it. Just wouldn't call it "Thanksgiving". She said that there is nothing wrong with turkey, and turkeys are more plentiful at this time of year.
When I left WT Land, I noticed in my reading that many other JW's shared her sentiment.
Okay, there's nothing wrong with pine trees. I just happen to like the smell of a pine tree in my living room. I enjoy decorating it all up. It's just that these trees are more plentiful at this time of year. I just won't call it "Christmas". Nothing wrong with that, right?

Yeah, I heard this on the news tonight. Who'da thunk that Keef would outlive so many of their sidemen? Bobby Keys, Nicky Hopkins, Ian Stuart, Billy Preston, Brian Jones.
