Atilla, if he let you talk to him for a whole hour, chances are he was interested in what you had to say. I'm sure he's doing some pretty heavy thinking on it right now. Even if he was defending the borg, remember that a lot of us sounded like good little zombies right up until the day we left- doesn't mean you weren't making progress with him. Good job!

A good little story.
by Atilla inwell, college is starting up next week for me and i had to go to campus today to pick up my books.
one of my friends from work as well as college has been nagging me all summer about this friend of his who is a jw.
my friend told me that they hang out all the time but often argue about religion.

What's your favourite word?
by myauntfanny inbecause of another thread i got curious about whether many people have a favourite word.
i've never really gotten over my first love, which was supercalifragilisticexpialidocious (seems like there ought to be a comma in there somewhere).
but that's not really a word.

Crying at the movies
by Insomniac ini have a hard time expressing my emotions in front of others.
i mean, i'd rather be naked than to let anyone see me cry.
however, there are a few movies that can, in spite of my best efforts, make me bust out crying like a little girl: .

Nosferatu, that one just made me giggly and kinda horny. Does that make me some kind of pervert?

SIACN- I should have been more clear. I only watch these when I'm all alone, in the dark, with the curtains pulled tight. Not even family gets to see me bawling!
I haven't seen Death Takes a Holiday yet, but I'll keep an eye out for it.

Life is Beautiful, Shawshank Redemption, Romeo is Bleeding, City Lights, all do it to me. I won't spoil it for those who haven't seen them yet, but it's the last scene in each of these films that pushes me over the edge.
What are some of your favorite weepy films?

Just finished Sock, by Penn Jillette, also Down Here by Andrew Vachss. Excellent, thought provoking stuff.
Also, since school is over, I am, as promised, reading a couple of utterly trashy romance novels. I won't tell you the titles, but they have couples passionately making out on the covers. Complete trash, but I need to get it out of my system before moving on to the complete works of Aphra Behn.

Does niceness work to convert a cult member ?
by kls ini am not talking about screaming at them but i know many talk of helping a person out of a cult with kindness.
has anyone really helped a cult member out with it ?
my own experience kindness has just helped me get walked all over.

If anything will help get them out, it's kindness and honesty. What will frighten them even deeper into the cult is an angry, fist-waving handful of apostates holding up placards outside of an assembly hall. The only apostates I knew of back in Texas were of this type, and they confirmed everything the WTS had told us about apostates. If they weren't so scary, I might have talked to them, and maybe left earlier than I did- I could have had a few more good years on the outside.
Deep inside, a lot of people really want to get out, but they just need someone to guide them, or to provide a listening, nonjudgmental ear. By treating them with kindness and compassion, we can do so much to dispell this image they have of those of us who've walked away from the org. Maybe that's the first step towards helping them make the decision to leave.

I'm a rare breed: I don't know any Christmas Carols
by Nosferatu inmy wife is absolutely amazed that i don't know any christmas carols.
she's asked me if i know the words to hallmark the harold angel something and i say "no".
as a child, i was exposed to them in elementary, but like a good jw, i blocked them all out.

Nos, don't feel bad; I don't know the songs either, except for most of one by Bing Crosby(?) about Christmas in Hawaii, that one of my former bosses used to play over..and over...and over.
I asked my fella to teach me some carols, but he only knows them in Danish. I guess I'll pick them up in time from listening to the radio, but in the meantime I'll just hum along.

So cool! When I read the title of your post, the first thing I thought of was Locks of Love. I do a charity event every spring (for Make-a-Wish and Locks of Love together) and a big part of my job is talking people into donating hair- not an easy sacrifice for the ladies to make! I adore anyone who gives up their hair for the kids. You did a great job raising such a generous, kind daughter.
