After getting all of Pope John Paul's luggage loaded into the limo (and he doesn't travel light), the driver notices that the Pope is still standing on the curb.
Excuse me, Your Eminence," says the driver, "Would you please take your seat so we can leave?"
"Well, to tell you the truth," says the Pope, "they never let me drive at the Vatican, and I'd really like to drive today."
"I'm sorry but I cannot let you do that. I'd lose my job! And what if something should happen?" protests the driver, wishing he'd never gone to work that morning.
"There might be something extra in it for you," says the Pope.
Reluctantly, the driver gets in the back as the Pope climbs in behind the wheel. The driver quickly regrets his decision when, after exiting the airport, the Supreme Pontiff floors it, accelerating the limo to 105 mph.
"Please slow down, Your Holiness!!!" pleads the worried driver, but the Pope keeps the pedal to the metal until they hear sirens.
"Oh, dear God, I'm gonna lose my license," moans the driver. The Pope pulls over and rolls down the window as the cop approaches, but the cop takes one look at him, goes back to his motorcycle, and gets on the radio. "I need to talk to the Chief," he says to the dispatcher.
The Chief gets on the radio and the cop tells him that he's stopped a limo going a hundred and five.
"So bust him," said the Chief.
"I don't think we want to do that, he's really important," said the cop.
The Chief exclaimed, "All the more reason!"
"No, I mean really important," said the cop.
The Chief then asked, "Who ya got there, the Mayor?"
Cop: "Bigger."
Chief: "Governor?"
Cop: "Bigger."
"Well," said the Chief, "Who is it?"
Cop: "I think it's God!"
Chief: "What makes you think it's God?"
Cop: "He's got the Pope for a limo driver!"

How many were raised as a JW during their teenage years?
by codeblue in.
and how many of you feel because of that, you never really got to be a "teenager"?

Growing up as a JW was/is extremely hard. No wonder so many young people bolt as soon as they are old enough. I was very lucky. My KH had just a handful of kids and most of us were great friends. However, I know this is the exception and not the rule. Some of the other congregations in the area were more "strict" and would not allow large gatherings of JWs, especially the teenagers. That would make me want to stick around and be a lifer.
I'm surprised the org. hasn't done more for the kids. Honestly, the old fogeys are dying out, if the WT wants to survive, they have to do more for their young members than the YPA book, the Bible Stories book and the Great Teacher book. Why not develop some sort of programs for them? I know they'd think (or will when they read this) "That's too much like Christendom." Hmmm... I wonder why the Baptists and Methodists and Catholics have these programs? Because they work. And, dare I say it? They CARE about the children in their congregations. They care enough to actually have programs that are going to keep their attention and teach them about their religion. The WTBS may say they care about the young people in the congregations, but have proven without a doubt, by their actions, that these words are false.
Just my two cents.

There's a new KH in my area that has windows. A big picture window. When I drove by last week, I could see people standing up and singing. It was very weird seeing a window there.

Gallon jars of pickles (the Wal-mart thread)
by DanTheMan ini can't figure out if wal-mart is a force for good or evil.
but this article was interesting, and even-handed.
it's long, you may not want to read all of it, but worth the effort to get through imo.

Wal-Mart... hmmm.... you either love it or hate it.
It scares me a bit that I've never known a world without Wal-Mart. I love the fact that they are so convenient. Like Got My Forty, we go once a week and get everything we need all at once. And, since we usually go on Sunday morning, when a lot of people are in church, it's pretty much easy in and easy out.
On the other hand, since this town pretty much only has Wal-Mart... I can see what people are talking about when they cry that Wally World is destroying their towns. It used to be different, but all the Mom and Pop stores have gone out of business.
But, honestly, you can't blame it all on Wal-Mart. Customers aren't forced to shop there.

I was disappointed that Amy left last week. Hope to see her around elsewhere and I think we will.
I agree, she has an extraordinary voice, and her hair is cool too!I'm there with you guys. Amy was my favorite from the very beginning. I'm hopeing we hear more from her. When she sang the Dixie Chicks' "Sin Wagon" on Country Night, it was a much better version, IMHO, than Natalie Mains'.
And, yes.... I don't have a life either. I've put all my friends and family on notice not to even try to call during American Idol, I won't be answering the phone.

Texas Panhandle
by Shutterbug inwe have received copious amounts of rain here in the panhandle, west texas and eastern new mexico, too much in some areas.
the point of all of this is this may be a good year for wildflowers.
we get them by the millions in a good wet year, but this being a semi arid region that doesn't always happen.

Thanks for posting the pics, Bug. I moved from Amarillo about 10 months ago. It was nice to have some pics to remind me of my old home.
One of the cool things about the Panhandle is the appreciation that the people there have for the environment. Here in AR, the interstates are lined with litter. In Amarillo, they were planting and cultivating wild flowers along the interstate.
