for many years since the witness organization, after i have told people that i'm no longer a jehovah's witness, people would say "oh the religion were people are not allowed to drink!".
"no they drink alright.....they can't do much of anything else but they do drink!".
in fact the first place i ever got drunk was bethel.
We know of an elderly Brother who recently passed away. Well known, well off and had many ties with WT Headquarters. HE WAS A MAJOR ALCOHOLIC. It actually was a big joke how much he drank. Died in his 90's, still an alcoholic. Was anything ever done to him? Was he DF'd? Nope....it's all who you know but little Johnny would get DF'd and loose all of his "friends" and family if he touched a boob or a cigarette . BAM! Abandoned and completely alone! Being a drunk is one of the things you won't get into God's Kingdom for, not touching a boob or smoking a cigarette. HYPOCRISY AT IT'S BEST!!!

not one to get all controversial.. typical situation, pretty much a born in and left the church at age 38 and never looked back.. i'm 53 now, parents getting older - late 70s but very active, dad is still an elder.. parents, in laws, brother and brother-in-law still uber active jws.. my family (wife and 2 adult children) out since 2005.. we have stayed close to our parents - we have treaded religion lightly and have had a pretty good relationship and have kept our personal lives and beliefs/opinions separated from them.
this was intentional - as we love them and do not want anything to cause shunning since they are getting older and want to be there for them and we respect their beliefs.. got this letter today.
"Since then, I've made it clear that social coercion and emotional blackmail will not work on me."
This is the key thing. Let them know that you can not and will not be bullied. We all have to do this in order to let WT know that their tactics don't work.
I truly believe that as more and more JW's wake up and leave the cult, WT and JW's will be well known for their tactics. The shunning is becoming known to the outside world. Who the hell is going to want to join a cult that does this to it's members?
are you aware of any double standards promoted by the organization of jehovah's witnesses?
here a a few i am aware of:.
1. the wts equated joining the ymca with apostasy but felt free to join the un for 10 years (1991-2001).
JW's can't do any work on a church, i.e. plumbing, electrical, painting etc, but good old Watchtower can sell a Kingdom Hall to a church. Blatant hypocrisy! We sold 2 of our Kingdom Hall's, in our area, to church's, years ago. Blood, sweat and the rank and files hard earned money went into both of them. Now....WT has all the cash!!!
No college education but we'll use all the Doctors, nurses, dentists, lawyers, engineers, etc. to help with our "kingdom interests." Biggest load of BS! WT will condemn you for attending college but they sure like to "use" your skills.
Why the JW's can't see this is beyond me!
so i'm on ebay looking for old jw books and i see this crap.... .
i think some cheap person has taken poundland dolls, put kids clothes on them and have the cheek to flog them for $73.60 (plus shipping).. for one, they look nothing like them.
and two, how creepy are these?!!
Caleb looks like the Shoney's Big Boy! lol Creepy!!!
Must be some weird JW trying to make money off of the JW robots.

My spouse and I have a agreement between us: "We only want people in our lives that genuinely WANT to be there."
Loved this mrquik, "Blood only makes relatives; not families. Move on."

The sad part about all of this is, they will contact you if they need financial help or physical assistance. When the congregation get's tired of taking care of them, they will encourage them to reach out to their children. I have witnessed this before and it is disgusting. You are dead to them UNTIL they need you.

It does hurt deeply. NO ONE should have to go through this. NO ONE. The only thing that you could do is be up front and honest with them but unfortunately it will probably be the same outcome (shunning). They told you in the letter that they would have contact with you only for "family emergencies."
They want you back 100% into the cult or they will have no contact with you.
I'm so sorry. I hate what this cult has done to people and families and hope one day it will pay for it. I hope I live long enough to see it happen.

Great responses above.
I guess there is really nothing that you can say to your parents that will make them WANT to be a part of your lives. Listener said it best, they couldn't even sign with love. Yes, WT does break up families but the family also goes along with it.
I came across a quote today. I thought about responding to a family members shunning of us but thought....why bother, it will make NO difference to them. I'm sorry that you are feeling the effects of the shunning. Hang in there and know that so many here have been and are where you are now. Hugs to you.

i was told today that my jw family had a massive family gathering with presents exchanged, drinks and a big roast dinner.
they even wore paper hats.. the day they chose for this family day?.
26th december.. totally not christmas or anything - honest.. does anyone elses family do that?
Our family does "not Thanksgiving Day" and "not your Birthday Day." Christmas and New Years? A gathering...with food and drink! lol
