They think that 'emptying your mind' will somehow allow demons to get in, which reveals just how ignorant they are of this subject (along with most judgemental Christian groups in general). Yoga and meditation make you more and aware and more conscious. They strengthen your mind. The term emptying your mind simply means clearing away the constant unfocused chatter that usually goes on inside our heads. If anything, this would tend to make a person MORE resilent to outside influence and demonic attack.

I'll probably get flamed for this, but my prayers have had effect. Once when I was being picked on in middle school, I was in the locker room getting dressed, and almost wished the ceiling would collapse and kill me. I didn't feel like I could go on, and started saying a silent prayer inside my head. At that moment, an amazing sense of peace filled me, and I felt like everything would be okay, even though I still felt horrible. My sense of being lost and alone there at that school vanished, and there was sense of being content with were I was at the time, though it soon faded. It's hard to describe, feeling peaceful when you've never been more unhappy. This happened several other times, though to a much lesser extent.
Thinking back on to those days, my thoughts when I said that prayer were somehow different than what they normally were. I didn't ask for Jehovah to end the situation, I would have felt selfish doing that, rather I asked for his spirit. I would not claim however, that my prayer was "answered", at least not in the sense of a finite God outside the universe miracolously helping me. No, it was much more complex than that, and at the same time much more simple as well. Even back then, I think my conception of God was different than most witnesses.

Haughtiness And The Witnesses
by shamus ini find that the witnesses are very "haughty".
haughty is described in the oxford dictionary as "proud of oneself and looking down on others"; how well this describes the wtbts.. how many people were very proud of having "the troof"?
how many people felt that they were special.

What really irritated me is how I'd be out in service with an older brother/sister, and when the householder would say they weren't interested. Now, the brother/sister would act all nice at the door like they're supposed to, but then back on the way to the car they would get all haughty and say the householder either had scales over their eyes or would regret sticking to their religion when the GT came around. Generally, it was the "spiritual pillars" of the congregation who seemed to act this way the most. Sometimes I felt like slapping them upside their heads...

Just thought I'd mention, although they are in the minority, there are a growing number of Christians who believe that everyone will eventually be saved by Jesus at some point, and not be condemned to hell for all eternity. They have arguements based off of the scriptures to support their beliefs as well.
I myself was a semi-Christian universalist for a while before I moved started studying mysticism.

The Theocratic Ministry School helped out quite a bit with my communication skills. As far as purely positive benefits go, that's about it.
The negative spirituality of WTS did, however, drive me to take a closer look at my life and what was really important, and gave me the need to seek out positive spirituality, which I might not have found had I been raised in a different manner.

Metaphysics/occult is knowledge of realities beyond the physical. Much of the modern New Age movement was actually based off of Theosophy (which was in turn based off of much older esoteric philosophies). I learned quite a bit from reading up on Theosophy. Except for their utterly ridicolous idea of "Root-Races", they've compiled a lot of useful information over the years. Based on what I've heard though, the Theosophical Society has become rather dogmatic over the years, and tend to blow their own trumpet more so than anything.
In case you're interested, they have an enormous glossary online:
http://www.theosociety.org/pasadena/etgloss/adi-ag.htm
It contains tons of information.

Many scholars wonder how the Chinese invented gunpowder but never invented guns. Strange.....
Probably because, in general, the Chinese were never as militant as the West due to Buddhist teachings. I once read somewhere that they did consider making guns, but decided not to due to the inhumaness of it.
Speaking of the Renassiance, it's interesting to wonder whether or not it would have happened without the tyranny of Church. As humans, we only tend to look at the smaller picture. Sometimes in the broad evolutionary scheme, long term progress is only made through the introduction of destructive elements.
