Just got this email
by Cindi_67 ini received an email from my sister in law.
she was relating an experience given in a talk at an assembly.
a young couple wanted to have children, but they couldn't conceive, so they decided to adopt a child.

This story would probably not have been told in Holland.
Just last week, the Dutch superior court confirmed a decision by a lower court that a JW-couple could not adopt a child. The reason is the blood issue. The couple refused to sign the statement in which they agreed they would allow all accepted medical procedures to their adoptive child. No transfusion? No adoption!

What makes this book "remarkable" is the outdated medical section. The most actual references to medical literature are dated in 1991, that is 16 years ago, which really is prehistorical as far as medical science is concerned. Doctors want research results from today and tomorrow, not from archeological times. One may wonder if this book is the latest edition.
Next, only medical literature has been selected that is in support of the Society's position. I doubt very much that many in the medical profession will give this work a prominent position on their bookshelf.

JW converts - what percentage fall away?
by Double Edge ini got into a discussion today at lunch with someone who years ago 'flirted' with becoming a jw (then 1975 came and went).
i've never been a dub, but what i've gather from this board there are those raised in the religion who after 30-40 years leave for whatever reason.
what percentage of those not raised in the religion, but are converted, become disillusioned and finally leave?
-
richard
The problem is that available statistics on JWs who leave the faith can not differentiate between expulsion (disfellowshipment or disassociation) and cease of activity. The latter may be permanent or temporary, so there may be many who would still call themselves JWs.

Ray Franz in 'Crisis of Conscience' did some calculations (see page 31, 2nd ed.) For 1970-'80 he found that four out of every ten persons baptized left the organization or ceased activity. You can apply his method to other periods.

Why are JWs so disrespectful towards war veterans, etc?
by winnie ini never could understand this.
do they have no respect???.
this subject came up when my hubby was talking to his brother on the phone a couple months ago.
-
richard
It could be a leftover from the early 1940s when the American Legion in particular was rather active in thrashing JWs for their unpatriotic stance.

Your last paragraph: it appears that the Society continued to be 'less than political correct' after 1946:
"The persecutions the Jews suffered bear grim testimony to the accuracy of the Biblical warning as to what the Jews could expect if they went contrary to their maker, Jehovah God" Awake! (Dec. 22, 1956, p.20)
“To this day the natural circumcised Jews are suffering the sad consequences from the works of darkness that were done within their nation nineteen hundred years ago. This illustrates what can happen to a whole nation that comes under the influence of that unseen superhuman intelligence, Satan the Devil.” (The Watchtower (Nov. 1, 1975, p.654).
