In fact, I just did try it about 2 1/2 weeks ago to stop smoking. The key, I would say, is to find someone who is reputable and not a 'scam artist'. My friend went to another similar seminar a few years ago and he was no more a hypnotherapist than I am. BUT, this seminar I went to was great....very informative and they teach you the self-hypnosis methods that you need to continue in order to achieve the mind over matter effects. It's not some 'magical spell' that will do all the work for you...you have to work along with what they say to do. But, it has worked for me (so far)! They also do weight loss seminars. Best of Luck to you!

ARE YOU UPSET THAT YOU DIDN"T GO TO COLLEGE?
by minimus ini have read of some people's bitterness because they were denied the opportunity to go to college.
during the 60's and 70's the society really discouraged any education other than what was necessary.
since the end was so near, especially around 1975, anybody that decided to go to "higher education" was considered very weak and unbalanced.

Sorry, but this is a topic on which I just have to vent some steam!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YES, I have been upset and quite bitter (and I don't like being negative as a rule)! I had the opportunity for a scholarship (at least a partial one) and I had to give up my dreams ... because it "might stumble" someone. It was in 1981 and they were getting a bit more lenient regarding education....more for like trade schools, rather than 4-yr colleges. BUT, my parents had always been proud of my grades and let me take the college entrance tests and all, but really didn't want me to go to college. I told them that if nothing else it would help me know where I stood with my peers, etc. (secretly then hoping that they'd see the good scores and agree to me going to school).
Well, I scored great and I started to have scholarship opportunities pop up and I had all but gently worked on my parents to give in and let me go when another elder heard I took the tests and caused a big ruckus. My dad was the P.O. and this elder had a fit that he'd allow me to take the tests, since going to college was out of the question and not a spiritual goal...blah, blah, blah. So, needless to day, to avoid 'reproach' my plans were totally squashed.
But you want to know what pisses me off the MOST about it all.......that very same elder ended up sending all his three kids to college (not all graduated) within the next couple of years. His excuses??? Son: "He wants to go to Bethel, so it would be helpful to the Borg if he had a good education" (son IS at Patterson now) Daughter#2: "She has had (behavioral) problems and I think keeping her in an educational setting would be good." Daughter#1: "She is going to be an old maid, so she needs to be able to support her self and needs a good education to do that."
THAT IS WHAT MADE ME EVEN MORE PISSED! It was a sin for me to go, yet it was "beneficial" for his children to go. Yes, I am bitter....in case you haven't noticed.
My father is now 80 and his mind is going...my mother KNOWS to not bring this subject up, as it gets me angry. One day my dad was showing me a picture a brother in their Hall had drawn and he was so proudly saying that this brother was going on to Art School and even got scholarship offers, etc. My blood was boiling, as my artwork in school was much better that his AND one of my scholarship opportunities that I had to give up was to The School of the Art Institute of Chicago! My mother notices the pain and anger in my face and changed the subject. (I can't be angry directly at him, because he is not really mentally 'here' all the time--otherwise I may have really gone off at him for being so proud of something that he forbid me to do myself).
I have been fortunate in my employment through the years, in that I have worked up to positions that usually require a mandantory degree. I've had good employers who have overlooked by lack of a degree and appreciated my hard work and knowledge. I haven't given up totally on college, but I just haven't been able to do it yet, due to various life circumstances. helped me get the 'on the job' experience. But, I have still been angry and bitter.....my boyfriend says I need to make it a goal in my life to go back to school....I have always kept that goal and someday I hope to acheive it......I may be in an old age home when I do it, but I want to do it!

Hi Voltaire,
My biological dad (never a JW) used to live near Montrose & Kimball. Now he lives off Irving Park exit, so I'm up that direction every so often. I love Chicago! Just thought I'd say that I know that area!! :-)

Kitten Burnt on Hot Coals (Serious)
by SYN in.
this is so horrible and unimaginably cruel.
i'm usually a very laid-back, easy-going guy, but if i ever saw people doing something this cruel to a helpless little kitten they would get to find out many painful things about the pointy end of a stick!

I was sooooooo upset when I read this story online yesterday. It just haunted me all evening....and then it was on the nightly news and it upset me again.
I have absolutely no love of fellow man for someone who can be so sadistic and cruel to an innocent creature like that.......and I try hard to do that "love your enemies" stuff, but I just can't do it when things like this are involved. I have no tolerance for people who are so evil & cruel to animals like that, or those child snatchers, or people who prey on the elderly or infirmed.
Personally, I think they should either place him on a BBQ grill, poke him with sticks, and taunt him until he roasts --- OR --- slowly peel off all his skin and drop him in a vat of boiling oil. But, that's just my thoughts...........
If anyone hears of where to send a letter to tell that judge to throw the book at him, let me know and I'll be more than happy to write my thoughts.

JWs and Stronger Marriages?
by Pubsinger ina bit of a follow on from the "honesty" thread.. another claim that jws make is that they have stronger marriages and are less likely to divorce.. try writing down all the jw couples that you know of that have divorced.. there are bonus points for those who didnt make 2yrs!.
i think you will be shocked at the number you can come up with.
we came up with 60 couples in less than 20mins.

Well, I fit into that catagory.....TWICE!
My first marriage lasted about 3 years and I honestly thought it was a wonderful one....we were both children of Elders/PO's. But, he wasn't happy with "the Truth", etc. When we divorced, back in 1987, I could count on one hand the number of JWs who were divorced....it was unheard of in this area and boy did it have the gossip mills churning.
Of course, I was "used material" and not exactly the best marrying material amongst JWs then. Well, I did actually happen to find a brother who would consider marrying a divorced JW. That marriage lasted 10 years....but we were both unhappy and knew that we married for the wrong reasons, but stayed together because we felt we 'had to'.
Over the years, though, I have noticed hearing about more and more JW divorces....and I ALWAYS knew about the many, many unhappy marriages that continued on just because it's the "right" thing to do according to the WTS.
My personal opinion, also, is that many JWs marry for the wrong reasons.....not so much because they have found their best friend or soul mate. You aren't given the opportunity to truly get to know someone with all the 'rules' they have. In fact, I knew one sister whose FIRST KISS ever to her husband was during the wedding ceremony....they were never alone once to even discuss important things like kids, their feelings, their families, etc. They weren't allowed to. No surprise that they divorced...only surprise is that it lasted as long as it did.
Now, in the "real world" -- which, by the way is not as horrible and scary as I was taught to believe -- I've found that you can meet people and have a relationship for the RIGHT reasons. Just my 2 cents....

Elder School and trained to believe about c.1980
by thewiz ini have only suspicions about this, and an elder at the hall over 2 -1/2 years ago tipped me off to this and kind of semi-verified my long held suspicions.
i never did get to elder school or even ms school because i never kissed enough ass, so i can't emphatically prove it myself.. he basically inferred or implied that nearly all the wtb&ts late 20th century problems had something to do with the "great" apostacy (witch hunt) of c.1980.. i have also talked to my brother-in-law about this matter a couple of times and he seems to be of the same bend or thinking.
it's kind of like the borginazational culture that everyone "believes" or it's "known" that the troubles were rooted out when ray franz and friends were booted.. .

My father was the PO for many years, and was the Assembly Overseer for the entire Circuit, so he went to all those Elders' Schools, etc. Anyway, while I have nothing in writing per se, I do remember him saying almost the exact thing. He said that it was 'those Apostates and Ray Franz' who tried to slip things into the literature to mislead and cause divisions in these "last days", but that they were discovered and ousted....but that after that, faithful ones would need to be careful at what they read regarding 'old information', etc. So, rather than the Society having to take the blame for things, in my opinion, they found scapegoats to take the blame.

I went to the conference 2 years ago, when it was also held in Itasca, IL. It was my first time actually meeting other online XJWs in person. It was wonderful!
I hope to also attend this year....as I live in IL, if I can swing it. When I was there 2 years ago and I met people who I knew as a child, as well as a couple who knew my parents many, many years before. Also, a family arrived late, who were actually once in my own congregation when I attended years before....they had been looking things up on the internet and ran across the site telling about the conference. It was cool to meet them again.
It made things feel so much better, seeing and speaking with others who could relate to my situation....as well as hearing some of the people speak. If anyone gets a chance to go, I highly recommend it. Before the conference, I think I'll check to see how many on this board may be there...so, if I make it, I can know who to look for!! :-D
