was it really so peaceful before 1914?.

the society loves to claim there was an unprecedented amount of peace prior to 1914 and that wwi was a complete shock to the world when it began.

yet history claims otherwise:.

I get a laugh when my JW mom will make a comment about some war, crime, or atrocity and how things are so bad since 1914. One time I responded that I felt that our day and age was more civilized and that I'd much rather live now than in such times as the Dark Ages, etc. She was shocked. When I told her about how life in the past was an adventure just to live day-to-day and spouted off examples, she was just silent.

I'm currently reading a book called "The History of Murder" (ok, I love history and like to read of true crime, etc.....call me morbid....) It takes a look at history and violence through the ages. I'm at work and don't have the book here for exact references, but way back you have the Cult of the Assassins [1000's - ?], The Thugs [1200's - ?], Ivan the Terrible [1500's], Vlad the Impaler [1400's], Countess Bathory [1500's] .....all of whom were responsible for the deliberate death of many many many......usually in terrible deaths. Then there is just the 'normal rules' and 'normal wars' which involved conquering, killing, raping, pillaging. And then there are the plagues, famines, etc. Just living from day-to-day seemed to be an event.

I truly believe, even with the current wars, atrocities, crime, etc., that we are no worse than history...we are more civilized (if that means anything).

How far back are j.w.'s allowed to research the w.t. doctrine?

I remember having a return visit on this older lady when I was just a youngster. She was nice and always talked to me. One day she stated that she & her parents used to study with the Bible Students when she was younger and that she knew very well who Pastor Russell was (and I barely knew who he was at that time...ha ha ha). She took me to her garage and showed me the boxes of books and old Watchtower and Golden Age magazines she had...all the way back to the 1910's/1920's. I thought that was real cool. She said that the next time I came she'd have some out and cleaned up for me to look at, etc. I was so excited. When I got back to the car group I told my dad about it and he came unglued! He said that I was NOT to go back to that lady's house and that I was not to look at any literature that she had, because she was obviously one of the Evil Slave class, because she & her family were not JWs. I couldn't understand why the books would be wrong to look at, since they were early literature of the JWs, but later, as an adult, I understood the paranoia. After all, so many of the older books and teachings can be 'weird', as well as possibly conflict with current teachings. As I did research later as an adult, I found those things out. So, according to my dad at the time, the "old light" was EVIL!

ps--a coworker of mine just left...it was her day off, as she is getting married on Saturday, and she brought in her ringbearer......it was her pug, Nermal, dressed up in a little tuxedo! I just LOVE DOGS!

JWs and adoption

what are your thoughts about jws adopting children?

has anyone here adopted children while a jw?

what are your views about this?.

I was adopted by a JW couple when I was about 2 years old (in the early 60's). Mom said that there were some difficulties in being 'approved' by adoption agencies due to being a JW. I don't know the details. However, my adoption wasn't through an agency, but was a private one. My sister & I were going to be made wards of the State until our biological great aunt and uncle stepped in to keep us from going to foster homes. They happened to be family and JWs. Their best friends, my adoptive parents, were not able to have children and truly craved a child, so they asked if they wanted us girls and they chose to just adopt me. Unfortunately, soon after my great uncle died and his widow left the JWs for a while and I didn't get to grow up around my sister.

Of course, being JWs, my folks didn't have much contact with their own fleshly family, so I missed out on that. I truly wish I had never been adopted by JWs. However, I loved my parents and didn't want to not have them....just their religion.

Later, in the 70's, we had a couple in our Circuit who wanted a child very much and had trouble adopting....partially due to the JW religion and partly due to emotional problems of the wife. (I'm sure part of the emotional/mental problems were tied into being JW's). They did eventually adopt. If I remember correctly, I believe she wished that her adoption hadn't been to JWs.

Most of the stories I have heard is that there sometimes is concern with JWs being adoptive parents, due to the blood issue and the being 'so different'. One of my former good friends (when I was a JW) couldn't have children and wanted to adopt, but the JW issue caused problems. They did, however, become foster parents for a while, but the State would have the authority to allow blood to the kids if necessary and if the parent objected to JWs religion, they were then not allowed to teach it to the kids or take them to meetings.

SHUNNING AT A TIME OF BEREAVEMENT..i told them what i think

i posted yesterday or day before regarding my anger at my wife being shunned the day after her father died.. in fact it was a very deliberate shun by 3 women who went out of their way to brush right past my wife.. i saw 2 of them today and went up to them in the school playyard and said very loudly for all the parents to hear:.

"i would like to thank you both for your condolensces and for walking right past my wife when her father had just died.. true christianity??

?.....isn't it lovely!!!!!!.

My dad was a PO and while he was really a hardline @ss about shunning DF'd people....he truly felt that doing so was showing 'love' (tough love)..... I have to admit that when it came to someone who has passed away or was seriously ill, he would throw out the shunning. That was the time, he said, that we should be loving and speak with and hug those DF'd relatives...and he wanted everyone in our congregation (small, rural) to be sure they showed their love. Everyone felt such a relief to be able to speak with or hug the DF'd one and not have to be so unnatural and rude to them. I feel fortunate that in our little area that we felt we could do this. I only wish, as I look through my rose colored glasses, that JWs could see that they could do more by being kind & loving all the time, but that will never be as long as they DF and DA.

i thought that recently i read a post where someone was reasoning about the 'misleading' information from the wts, such as when they stated that the jws in 1914 were anticipating what we believe now about 1914, but how if you looked into the literature of that day, they believed that christ already came in 1874 and it wasn't 1914 like we believe today.....or something to that effect.

i am preparing some information that i may share with my mom and i wanted to include that point....as one (of many) examples of the misleading information provided by the fds.. does anyone remember that post and point me to it?.

as you posters know my mom has been a "devout" jw for over 40 years and just won't bend when it comes to the faults of the wts.

i have talked until i was blue in the face for over 10 years since da'd myself in 1993 but just can't crack my mom.

well she made another ridiculous comment to me the other day in her attempts to get me "reinstated" back as a jw.

I've found that JWs have a round about way to rationalize anything they want.....for instance, when growing up, if someone left the borg and bad things happened, like with MJ, then, yes, they would say just like your mother....that those things wouldn't have happened if they hadn't left the borg. YET....if someone left and was successful....such as getting a good job, a nice house, or whatever......THEN, they would say that they apparently Satan was rewarding them for leaving the borg, and that they had better enjoy it now, because they will lose it all at Armageddon.
