Watched the film Sicko by Michael Moore......
by fifi40 inwatched this film last night and i just wondered what others thoughts are on it........sorry if this topic has already been discussed.. basically the film picks on the usa's health care system as compared to other countries including canada, britain, france and cuba.. in britain we take for granted the nhs which we pay for through national insurance contributions, children up to 16 and the retired over 65 get free health care.............watching sicko made me appreciative of the system we have in place which is similar to the other countries mentioned.. thoughts anybody???

Sikhs - Is it degrading to for men to wear a turban?
by digderidoo inmerry's thread seems to be descending into debating the pros and cons of muslims.. but i want to pick up on one point that for some on this board they seem to feel that it is degrading for women to wear the hijab.. living in the midlands uk which is very multicultural there is a large indian sikh population.
some choose to wear the turban, some dont.
some of these may wear it due to social pressure, but i believe that for many it is an identity that they are proud of.. for those on hear who think that is demeaning for a muslim woman to wear the hijab, do they feel the same about a sikh man wearing a turban?

My understanding of the Sikh turban is that both male and female adherents don it. It is not worn as a distinction between humans (a woman covering herself to be subservient to her husband or to mask her sexuality) but it is done as a representation of their religious conviction. Both sexes wear a headcovering of sorts, by choice. You can do a simple google search and learn more about Sikh turbans.
Unlike hijab, with the turban neither men or women are beaten or abused for not wearing it. Hijab to me is very offensive because of the oppression it produces throughout the world. -

Oh ... and one of my other favorite quotes/lines was when one of the the women interviewed in France made the excellent point (not an exact quote, I'm afraid) ... "In France, the government fears the people .... In America, the people fear the government". I wanted to applaud it was SO TRUE!! Comparing our 2 histories and where we are today, how those histories have or have not been sustained, it was just so SIMPLY stated and absolutely accurate.

Watched it twice. Know many people in the USA that are in the same boat as those introduced in the film. One more reason for Americans to be disappointed in our country. One of the most inspiring parts of Sicko, IMO, was the interview of the British politician (and knight?) who spoke about the impetus for Nat'l Healthcare to be introduced in Britain and the tenets and basic rights of democracy. He was very eloquent.

What motivates a person to start a religion?
by serendipity indoes anyone know of books, magazine articles, etc that explore the motivating factors in the origins of religion?
i'm especially interested in religions started by a single person.
of course, your personal opinions are welcomed.

Lies on Line...I always thought JWD was a forum for Honesty
by restrangled inafter finding this forum and being raised in the jw religion, i found jwd a refreshing place for honest feelings, fears, life experiences etc.. the history of the jw's was exposed, and those who lived any experience under this regime has been told by many members.. to be lied to by any forum member is insulting.
i have over my past year and 1/2 come to love many posters.
i realize many more have much longer time put in here.. i have been honest and exposed more of my self than i care to think about, but always kept in mind that others were doing the same and it was best for anyone new.. to lie on this forum to all of these members is horrible and i am questioning why i am so honest here.

Trevanian, the Mojave Desert would have to freeze over before I'd post my current personal information on this board. I think this thread topic is a hypocritical joke. On a board of this size and traffic, not to mention the hordes of walking wounded just waiting for an opportunity (even if they may not entirely realize it) to lash out at people who don't agree with their religion or their politics or their opinions ... well it would be the epitome of bad judgement to share such details.
Does that mean one is a liar or dishonest by not doing so? Not at all, just exhibiting wisdom and prudence. You are confusing the Internet with Real Life. -

What Has Happened to This Place!!??
by journey-on inwhat has happened to this place??!!.
i left this board a while back to reorganize and get refocused.
the vibe of jwd was changing and the forum became "unbalanced" (for lack of a better word).

Sorry?
by RichieRich inover the past few days... someone who i'm no longer associated with has been out on vendetta to discredit me.
it started with a mass mail to my myspace friends, which caused nothing more than a few eyebrows to be raised.
that was the reaction of people who know me in real life.

Hey Rich, good luck - I think you made the right decision to come back and make the comments that you did. Nothing but a bunch of drama that should never have stunk up the board to begin with. This is exactly why I would never share current personal information on this board. To think that people think they are entitled to phone employers etc and discuss personae identified by screen names OR real information is just mind boggling. The short list of folks I HAVE made acquaintance and friendship with VIA this board, (But off this board), would never deem such action appropriate.
My advice to all is never place any information on a message board of this size and kind that can be traced back to your life specifics. That is misplaced trust that can and likely will return to bite you in the ass. Nor do I place more than a minimal amount of confidence in most anything that I read on this board, have been the recipient of aforementioned ass-biting on more than one occasion. Personal information should remain just that, PERSONAL.
Rich, I bet you've learned a bit the past few days about the true nature of folks. Take that with you and leave the rest, at least with that knowledge you can say you gleaned something positive out of it. -
