Dating rules for the mature jw. What are they?
by topcat ini'm just curious.
i am not a jw, nor do i ever plan on becoming one, however, after reading some posts regarding dating i was wondering how couples who are say 40+ handle it.
if either had been married previously and were now single again how does one begin dating when there appears to be so much control?

Hi Topcat,
Yes, as unbelievable as it may sound, even 40+ people would need to have a chaperone. And sex is definitely off-limits. Taking a multiple-day trip together would be virtually unheard of, unless planned with a group and rooming arrangements carefully worked out so as to avoid any appearance of impropriety. I promise I'm not exaggerating.
Yes, people would squeal if they saw anything even remotely considered wrong. The couple may even turn themselves in. The conditioning is very strong.

Have You Renounced Everything Jehovah's Witnesses Believe In?
by minimus innow that you don't practice the religion, is it safe to say that you reject everything that you were taught??
?

Gopher:
No. Blindly believing the opposite of everything one was taught is black-and-white thinking.NeonMadman:
I think the question as framed begs for a JW-style, all-or-nothing answer. Either you believe it all, or you reject everything. I don't think anybody is 100% wrong about everything.Well put, Gopher and NeonMadman. When I first read this subject, I thought, "Of course not. That would be silly." I left the organization because I found its belief system to be sufficiently untrue, but that doesn't mean that every last word published was a vicious lie. I prefer to consider what elements of truth there may be in their beliefs and to incorporate these into my own outlook.
One belief of the Witnesses that I agree with is that material things have limited usefulness in procuring happiness in life. My views certainly don't line up exactly with the Witnesses in this matter, as I do believe in getting an education and finding a good career, but I believe that satisfying work is ultimately more important than payscale gradients, and I feel that an early appreciation of this truth came in part from my association with the Witnesses.

I've arrived here seemingly by providence...heh heh.
by boa inits my first post and i don't really know where to start, there been so much on my mind.
i've been reading threads on this site like crazy and obtained a copy of coc from the library yesterday.
i stayed up until 4am reading it, and i'm impressed with the way it was written - its just like reading a w only the subject matter is a little different hehe.. i'll break myself in gently with this site over time but basically a few things about me are: born in a jw family, baptized as a young teen, 1 yr aux pio, several yrs as reg pio, 1 year as 'special' full time pio at bethel.

Do Nice Guys Really Finish Last?
by sandy ini was just thinking about this and would like to get other opinions.. girls, do you tend to fall for nice guys?
and by nice guys i mean guys who fall all over you and worship the ground you walk on?.
because frankly, i cannot deal with guys like this.

LOL @ doodle-v.
First, let me agree with Sandy. Dusty: WTF, dude?
I've been watching this thread with some interest, because I consider myself to be a nice guy. At first it was disconcerting to see a few women saying that they did not like nice guys, but via the rest of the posts and conversations held in person at this past apostafest, I think the primary problem lies in definitions, as many people have already pointed out on this thread.
For me, being nice and being a pushover are not at all related. Being kind and courteous is not mutually exclusive with having strong convictions and standing up for them. Personally, I'm not at all afraid to defend myself both in writing and in person, and I think my voice is confident when I do. For me, being a "nice guy" means being good-natured and acting with sincerity and empathy for others.
Looking at the issue in the other direction is also illuminating for me. My ideal girl is a "nice girl," but not in the docile, hiding-in-a-corner way. I look for self-assertiveness and confidence, a strong sense of self and individuality, coupled with a good-natured modesty and concern for others. Really, the qualifications for "nice-personhood" in my mind are exactly the same for both guys and girls. Unfortunately, as terms, "nice girl" sounds entirely different from "nice guy" to me, the latter being the better embodiment of the ideal I strive for.
My gosh, that sounds convoluted. Lately I haven't been very articulate. But there you have it.

Another survey from Lee
by Lady Lee inreading simon's post about how things used to be i started thinking about how the internet has changed things.
many believe the internet and the freedom of information it contains will be the undoing of the wts.. when i was a jw, there were a few dfings but maybe one a year or even less.
people drifted away but we really didn't pay a lot of attention unless it was a close friend.. in here we see new people coming in all the time.

- What year did you leave?
2003, September- How old were you when you left?
25- Did the internet have anything to do with your decision to leave?
Not directly. I did not read any information that would be directly outlawed by the organization. But the existence of the Internet, along with a general increased consciousness of the availability of information, probably produced the culture in which I was able to objectively consider evidence contrary to the Watchtower Society. (Hope that makes sense.)- If you left before you got on the internet what reading did you do about the WTS or cults that helped you make your decision?
None.- What was the one most important reason that helped you decide to leave (even if the decision was made for you through a DFing).
It was an intensely strong feeling that Witnesses were intellectually dishonest.- If you left and still thought it was "the truth" what helped you change your mind?
I knew it was not the truth after I left, but CoC helped me decide to formally withdraw.SNG

What is the worst revenge you've taken on the WT, Elders, or JW's?
by DevonMcBride inother than living a happy life, is there anything you've done to get back at them?
i never was a jw but did do some creative things to cause a stir in one of the local halls.
all of it was legal too.

I add my votes to those who feel that there is no need to add injury to the already-repressed lives of JWs. I have escaped with my life - there is no reason I would want to hurt those who have not done so yet.
