Elders don't show for former elder's excommunication hearing
DRAFFENVILLE, Ky. - An excommunication hearing for a former Jehovah's Witnesses elder didn't occur as scheduled Friday night because the three elders assigned
To hear his case failed to appear.
Bill Bowen, 44, of Draffenville, faces expulsion from the church for speaking out against its handling of sex abuse allegations. He claims child-abuse allegations
are not typically reported to authorities by the Jehovah's Witnesses because of the church's policy of handling problems internally.
Bowen and about 50 allies - some of whom came from as far away as California and Florida - gathered in front of the Draffenville Kingdom Hall before his
scheduled 7:30 p.m. hearing. Some of them were victims of child abuse at the hands of other church members, Bowen said.
But the panel of elders never arrived, he said.
"I'm quite perplexed," Bowen said. "They gave me the time, the address and the location in writing. There was no misunderstanding on my part where I was
supposed to be."
Bowen resigned his elder position in December 2000 to protest the church's policy.
Church leaders have denied wrongdoing.
Bowen could've been disfellowshipped - or excommunicated - from the church for sowing discord in the faith by speaking out against the church's handling
of allegations of child molestation.
Bowen was disappointed and angered that the hearing didn't happen.
"I had several witnesses to testify on my behalf, and there was a considerable expense to get them all here," Bowen said. "If they ask for another hearing,
I'm going to ask them to either dismiss the charges of pay the expenses for all the witnesses to come back, because they inconvenienced them."
Members of the church are required to shun those who are disfellowshipped, even if they are members of their own family.
"Facing an excommunication hearing is a very stressful thing. I've had this hanging over my head," Bowen said. "When I finally have a moment to get it over
with and testify and find out what their charges are against me, for them not to show up, creates even more anxiety.
"It's very unkind, and very unprofessional."
Three others who have spoken out against the church's policies have been disfellowshipped in recent weeks. They are Barbara Anderson, of Normandy, Tenn.,
and Carl and Barbara Pandelo, of Belmar, N.J.
"Something is wrong," Bowen said. "Victims should not be punished."
Tema Smith-Bosken, of Cincinnati, a church member who said she was molested by a family member, was one of about two dozen people who stood in support of
Bowen on Friday.
"A lot of people are questioning the motives of the individuals who are coming forward," Smith-Bosken said. "We're just a bunch of people with big hearts
who are strong enough to come forward on the hope, just the hope, that something will change. I know my talking ... will put me in the line of fire."
In a statement issued from their headquarters, the Jehovah's Witnesses have said church leaders are "required by the Holy Scriptures to see to it that the
congregation remains clean and unified."
J.R. Brown, a spokesman for the denomination, has said that parents are not punished by the church for going to the police first in cases of child molestation.
He also said members found guilty of molestation by a church judicial committee are removed from all positions of responsibility and cannot evangelize door-to-door
without being accompanied by a fellow Jehovah's Witness.
Bowen isn't sure what will happen to his case now.
"It's the accused that usually doesn't show," he said. "We were ready. The elders didn't follow through with their word.
"What they want, I think, is to try to set up a new hearing to have the advantage to their side. They want me by myself, they want me at a disadvantage.
I'm not going to let that happen."

Tema You Rock!!! Silent lambs, You Rock!!! You all rock!!!
All of you who idly say nothing note the simple, beautiful truth being revealed here to us all. The only way you can ever hope to make a change is if you act to promote the change you seek. In other words, it is sometimes good to get off your ass and do something positive.
Dubs, stop waiting on Jehovah, already. He’s obviously here and busy at that. You just can’t see him for the 2 by four in your eye.
christendom teaches that there are three persons in one substance.
yet there is not three gods but one god.
what could be more unscriptural and illogical?
Bang:
ROFL!
Jesus, yep, I can believe. God, (a loving God), um yep that too, but... Jehovah? It has always sounded to me like something you'd call out if you were especially constipated. Ja....Hov....AH!!! (plop).
After finding out that JHVH was the exact nomenclature used, I couldn't understand why that wasn't enough for folks. I mean, wrap your mind around the concept that maybe what is sacrid should be left that way, at very least, out of respect. We all are human though, and as a species, we haven't gotten that concept of sacrid quite down yet. We are, just as our maker, imperfect, I guess. Afterall, we were made in his immage, and if we are imperfect...
eutapro,.
you may wonder why some people jumped on you so hard.
it is because you came here proclaiming yourself an intellectual, a scholar, or what ever you called yourself.
Eutaprostate:
Please, please, please, sir (vomit) dispense with the over abundant use of honorifics. Not only is it in bad taste, but, it’s pretentious and condescending, as well. While your at it, you may want to stop playing games, too. Lyers suck; trolls suck; lying Crotch Tower trolls suck even more, but, you being a lying Crotch Tower troll who insists on using Mr. And sir in every adversarial post you spew forth suck most of all.
.
last night my sister-in-law asked my kids why they haven't been attending meetings.
she cornered them individually.
she asked my son and he said no he has not been attending meetings and that he has been doing some research and that he didn't believe it was the truth.
Don't you just love the warmth, love, and not to mention christian kindness oozing from witnesses. Hey, where can I sign up? It is just so sad, so damn sad.
holy crap!!!
if i hear one more ...... "pedophilia exists everywhere" excuse from a d*** jw troll ... i am going to start shooting i swear!!.
the simple fact of the matter is that they claim to be gods earthly organization.

Hun:
Before you make any plans to go out-a-shootin, you had better get your fanny home and make me some dinner. Like pronto, babe! Oh, and as your head, I command you to come home and give me some head. Oh, sh*t, as a dubsband, I can't demand head, I forgot, no oral. Isn't that ironic, the most anal religion in the western world doesn't allow oral. HMMMM?
Aluminutty soon to be blown out-of-the-water by his lovely wife . . . <grin>
i was wondering today about how jw are not allowed to socialize with wordly people.
how can they judge other religions if they aren't allowed to witness religous practises other than their own?
my friend is a jw, so to better understand her religion i participated in one of her religious gatherings...yet when i invited her to my church she wasn't allowed.

CONTROL!
BTW excelent point and insite. What better way is there of retaining adherents then forbidding those adherents -- on punishment of disfellowshiping (excommunication)
-- from even entering another place of worship?
If a person is only allowed to be exposed to the truth(tm), then their chances of seeing it as a lie are much diminished. Those who control
the flow of information, truly do control the masses.
I'm suddenly struck by the notion that the internet, therefore, is really cool! . . . a gift from God, perhaps? Anyone, me, you, Simon, hell even a fecal
fetishist, for example, can create a website relating to me, joe public, what they Joe Website owner want, and noone, not even the Witch Power Society,
or the Christian Conflegration of Jehovah's Whitlesses, can prevent the free exchange of information from taking place. But, alas, it is late, and I digress.
this morning we got a phone call to ask us if they could come and interview us this morning.
they will be here in about 1 hour.

Board:
I don't want to be hastey, but, this news may be much bigger than you think. If the "channel 9", of which you speak, is WWOR in New York, then yet again you've gone national. WWOR channel 9 from New York is available nationwide on cable systems and to Dish Network satellite subscribers on channel 238. If it is WWOR, please REE so those of us who can watch can tune in and tape to help spread the word.
Aroarer, Barb, I want to take a brief second to tell you that what your are doing is *great*! You are acting as a powerful voice for those victims of child physical and sexual abuse who have been silenced by the evil, yes evil, policys of the Witch Tower. You bring hope to millions, literally, hope that they haven't suffered in vain, hope that some day -- and this is the most important point -- the Witch Tower will amend it's views and decide that the protection of children is more important than upholding the reputation of a silly publishing company. Even if no one ever leaves the borg as a result of your actions, if the policies that effect the rank and file are changed, then those trapped within it will be safer.
God bless you!
