Movie recommendation: Defending Your Life

i wanted to recommend a movie and see if any of you had ever seen it.

the movie is called defending your life, with albert brooks and meryl streep.

it's a comedy, but it strikes at some important truths.

Absolutely loved that movie. Talk about it from time to time with friends when certain things occur that remind me of it. Most of my friends have not seen it. Guess it didn't get the big play or big hype like some movies do. No car crash scenes, no nudity, no swearing. Hmmmm.....How could it be worth viewing. Well, Meryl puts on a very good show. Also, Al Brooks character has such dry wit it just cracks me up. "Give me a break! I'm dead." (In response to Meryl's character saying that he appears to be walking a little stiff.) Alot of people just don't get Al Brooks.

Also, try the movie, Lost in America. Another good Albert Brooks film. With Julie Haggerty as his wife.

Did You Ever Celebrate Birthdays Or Holidays As A Witness?

i knew some that secretly celebrated thanksgiving, the 4th of july, christmas (the day after) new year's eve, and birthdays.

my family always had a turkey on thanksgiving and we might invite only close friends that we knew would not get stumbled.

Never could get the difference between celebrating a birthday, and a baby shower. Seems like I remember JW women getting together to ooh and ahh over a newborn, bringing little gifts etc. Isn't that acknowleging or celebrating a birth? Seems right and proper to do it, but do it only once? I thought meaningful, important events were to be "remembered" annually. Oh well............

After JW, do you hunger for all the things you didnt do..simple things

being raised a jw, i honestly did not know what a great big world we live in.

all the places i never went to see, things i wanted to do,,,, because i figured , i will just do that when the new world gets here.

there was always going to be forever to do all the things that make life interesting.. i settled for the here and now as a good jw, meetings, field service, studying the same material over and over in the wt publications, and that was my life.

Funny you should bring the topic up. Just yesterday I reflected on it. With the JW thing, your life was always on "hold". Why try to live your whole life in the "first 1/2" of a yardstick that extends forever" we were told. What bunk! But I bought it for 44 years. Except now, one important factor looms. My age! How do you get those years back?

Yesterday I reflected that I have good friends that I can discuss any topic with, not just the 'the truth' topics. I play golf, as often as three times a week (in the good weather.) I now plan for my retirement, not just blow it off because the New System will be here and obviate the need for cash. I have more interest in fixing up my home, not thinking that the effort is wasted, what with the New System pending.

I celebrate holidays, triumphs of my kids, my wife's accomplishments, etc. I now look for reasons to make any moment special. I am trying to develop traditions that we can cherish and pass on. I am interested in taking some classes on developing my voice so that I can sing like I always wanted to. I am a member of a book club, go to Kiwanis club meetings, golf club, Chamber of Commerce meetings, etc. In short, I have a re-newed interest in living life, and not just surviving until the end comes.

i wanted to get your opinions on this since it's been bothering me for quite a while.. when i was hired at my job more than 5 years ago, the place was busy as hell.

i was originally hired to help in the circuit board manufacturing.

the guy who was doing it was flooded with work and couldn't keep up.

wow that was a strong quake - it shook my a$$ right outa bed!

i frantically stumbled to the bookcase and grasped for one of the watchtowers my mom sent me in the mail.

it got really intense then, and when i looked down my hands were on c of c!

Oh, and another thing. Did you ever notice that if a natural disaster just misses a KH, it "shows you how God can protect his own", but if it happens to demolish one, the rationale always goes, "just goes to prove the Bible true, "time and unforeseen occurences befall us all", blah, blah, blah. What a crock!

Just shows to go ya, they can turn anything around!

Beards, can someone explain?

can someone give me a sensible explaination as to why the jw's have banned beards?

i was df'd in '90 just as this was becoming a big deal and at the time i thought it was completely rediculous what with jesus probably having a beard.

it was one of the many things that led me to seeing that the gb make arbitrary rules and that the organisation has more to do with control than religion.

Yeah, the beard thing is a funny issue. Maybe God made a mistake and created them, forgetting that it would be thousands of years before the Bic was invented.

I'm old enough to remember a similar type of arbitrary rule, at least in my old congregation. But I think it was pretty unanimous in the borg in the '60s. That of the pastel colored dress shirt. You had to wear white if you wanted priveliges. Tan, light blue, grey and (horrors) pink shirts, even when worn with the appropriate tie and suit jacket just wouldn't cut it. I remember a brother telling me that if I wanted to 'reach out', I'd have to wear white. And you thought it was just for virginal brides! ....lol

Privacy, wow, that topic as it applies to kids, can go in several directions. I've raised three, but have this philosophy: If you compare kids to little coiled up springs, then you have to "release" them slowly. Or they just go boing! all over the place. As they grow, release them slowly, adding priveliges and responsibilities as they merit such. Trustworthy kids should be afforded the trust that they merit.

As far as the locator phones, I don't think I would use them unless my child were being dishonest with me, getting into trouble, etc. I believe these child "privacy rights" need to be tempered with the parent's right to know certain things. Afterall in many areas the consequences for inappropriate behaviors come home to roost with the parent, and only secondly to the child.

I need help to convince my mom that WTS is a big lie

hi everyone i'm new to this site and am just looking for some help as to the best way to go about talking to my mother about wts.. i've told her about the hypocrisies of the watchtower and cited some examples where they were wrong including about their association with the.

united nations....but she just yells thats a lie that's a lie..(in spanish)...lol .

she is very dissapointed in me for leaving and says that the only day she will be happy is when i come back to the "truth"..but i'm convinced.

To 6169: I agree with most observers who wrote that you'll need to wait this one out pretty much. Be ready with the right word, but keep it short, and gentle. It's a long fall for some adherents! And the landing is without pity.

Also, I've heard this...."A man convinced against his will, is of the same opinion still." So you can't try too hard to "convince" someone. It's pretty much true that people have to come to some conclusions by themselves. Hopefully your mom is an observant lady and will "watch" the Watchtower.

saddam hussein is single-handedly responsible for the death and injury of millions of people.

My one possible reservation to the death penalty here in the states has always been about the possibility we could be executing an innocent person. With recent DNA evidence returning more and more convicted felons to freedom, the issue is even more poignant.

However, with Saddam, my feelings are salved. He is guilty, as his trial will demonstrate of horrible crimes. Unspeakable crimes. Such a person should pay with his life. Obviously, Saddam holds that as his dearest possession or why else would he have surrendered to his captors? He values his life over every thing he told his troops and loyalists. (fight til the death, etc.) Justice declares he forfeit his life. A sense of justice is something inate, within all of us, any culture, and not something we learn. Don't try to overthink this one, it's a no brainer!
