  What books have shaped your affected you?

  in another post i mentioned job a comedy of justice by robert heinlien.

  the responses to the post got me thinking about other books that have affected me.

  what books have had an impact on your life?

  I have to agree with conficted on the "Celestine Prophecy". I have the book at home but can't remember the author either. Although it is a fictional book, it did impact my view of spirituality. The whole idea of the book was that God is all around us, in nature, in our hearts. It mildly mock's organized religion.

  Another was "Memoirs of a Geisha". Unfortunately, I can't remember the author of this one either, but it is an excellent story. Once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down.

  Last but not least is "White Oleander" by Janet Fitch. Excellent plot. The main characted goes through the most horrible things possible and instead of feeling helpless, she finds strength within that she didn't know she had. She ultimately learns that happiness lies within yourself and comes out a winner in the end. I strongly recommend this book.

  Does DF'ing Backfire?

  in an organization as obsessed with control as this one is,.

  i have to wonder if the society's leadership ever considers how.

  disfellowshipping can turn against them.. i doubt, when they developed the idea of a person "disassociating.

  I have to admit that I have often wondered how shunning is the "loving" thing to do and how it will encourage a person to return. This may not be true is most cases, but I've noticed that most disfellowshipped JWs I knew weren't sinning because they were evil people, but because they were going through very hard times and were looking for an escape, even if thier choices weren't the best or most moral. I think when somebody is going through something like this, you would want to surround them with love, not banish them from the congregation and judge them as bad association.

  Once a DFd person gets over the initial shock of loosing his/her family and friends, their reaction isn't, "They were doing the loving thing and helping me see the error of my ways." like the society wants. Nine times out of ten, a DFd person tells the society to fuck off and they never return. Yep, I see the DFing policy is REALLY working.

  Hi my names josephus, and i am an apostate.

  well this is the day.. i mentioned to my mum that i read a good book recently about dates, and cronology.. she blew up and told me i was just trying to read anything that attempts to disprove jws.. apparently i am like those apostates, and people didnt want to talk to my because of it.. "this is the truth", she said.. well i am now an apostate.

  it doesnt feel as bad as i thought it would.. josephus

  Let me elaborate a bit more for you, YoYoMama. I believe that the bible is unbiased also. However, what about all of those wonderful Christians out there that live moral lives but don't interpret it the way you do?

  Also, you wouldn't know where to research the bible besides Watchtower Publications. They spoon feed you all that they want you to know, because they are the "mouthpiece of god" which you are not to question. People here such as Joelbear looked deeply into things beside WT publications and began disagreeing with WTBTS.

  Uhhhh.....Thanks for answering my question so thoroughly YoYoMama.

  Do you want to know why you didn't say more than one sentence? Because your answer would have been, "The Watchtower literature is an unbiased source or information." and we all know that's a bunch of bullshit. You and I both know that you have absolutely no logical answer for Farkel's question. You've been cornered and have no answer for it.

  I'm not sure if it was in this thread or another, but you said that the Organization may have to answer to Jehovah for some of the mistakes it made. If the organization has a possibiltiy of being judged harshly from Jehovah, how could it be the mouthpiece of god? Obviously, it is just like every other religion that JWs profess NOT to be like. Your theories sink again, YoYoMama.

  we are not jehovah's witnesses because of a variety of circumstances, but one thing we all share is that we question.. what factors come together to make us questioners?.

  but i know a lot of very smart non-questioning jehovah's witnesses.. bravery?

  Wow. People have made alot of interesting points on this thread, some that I hadn't pondered before.

  I understand what you mean Joel, as to not being able to put your finger on what makes people leave. For me, it was an indescribable feeling in the pit of my stomach that told me things were just not right. There are so many discrepancies in what the organization teaches. It's almost like my soul and mind wanted to grow but couldn't because of the JW limitations. I wanted to reach out and make a difference with human kind, but we were warned of "bad association" in the world. I think human beings have the natural desire to love and connect with others, but the WTS prevented you from doing that by limiting who you associated with. I was eager to learn, but was told college was bad as another Watchtower was shoved in my face to read. And above all, it was the lack of individuality. As many of you said, you weren't allowed to have your own thought, opinions and consciences.

  YOYO:

  I think Farkel raised an excellent question. How do you personally define "unbiased". Also, what would you consider to be an unbiased source for finding information on JWs. You say that apostate material is biased and obviously JW literature is going to be biased also. What is your opionion?

  Is Life What You Make It?

  life is what you make it.. broadly speaking, i do believe that.

  it seems to me that most persons fall into 1 of 3 categories:.

  1. the well-balanced person who is a good achiever and enjoys the fruitage of his labours.

  Wow, Englishman. Your summary is very true, however, I think that we can be a mixture or move from category to category in our life, depending on our experiences and how old we are.

  Unfortunately, growing up I fit totally into category 2. I was extremely self critical of everything I did. I was so negative that my own mother called me the "neurotic" child of the bunch. Although I am still inclined to be that way sometimes, I feel with age and experience that I've moved more towards number one. I've relaxed a bit and developed a sense of humor. I really don't think that started happening until I left the Dubs, to tell you the truth!

  Extreme fundamental religions such as the dubs tend to nurse such personalities as group #1 and #3.

  apostate gathering in Las Vegas very important!!!

  dung beetle has been in touch with me.... we need to know how many to plan for.... this has to do with trying to find an area that is free possibally even having those living in las vegas making the main meal the those who are out of towners buy deli salids and so forth.. it can happen but please let's get this organized to a degree it will come off smoothly.. if it is just a gaming thing then it is a gaming thing...but if it is a serious gathering to meet and associate then that is another thing which i am interested in.. dan

  I'm pretty sure my boyfriend and I will be there. It all depends on how much money we have after Xmas, but I'm 75% sure we'll end up going.
