Welcome new light! I just joined a month ago, and this place has been great. I've been doig research since september and it's incredible the things the society don't want the R&F to know. You'll make lots of friends here. It's really good that you've decided to go to college, many here will agree that it is one best thing they've done, especially since the wts discouraged many from going.

hello everyone
by itsallgoodnow inmy first post here - - wanted to give my story, too.
raised a jw, stayed in out of fear, painted myself into a corner and currently struggling to get out completely.
i know lots of people would say they don't respect someone who knows they don't want to stay but is staying for other reasons, like family & friends or whatever.

Welcome to the board!!
I am in a similar situation as you because of family. That's the only reason i'm still inside. Hopefully someday things will change and I'll be able to get all of this behind me. There are many others here who are, or were in similar situations, so stick around, and you'll realize how great this place is.

Ever Seen The Movie 'Blast From The Past'?
by cypher50 inyou know, the one where brandon fraser grows up in a bomb shelter and finally comes out after so many years to a world totally new to him (like some modern day rip van winkle)?
that is how i feel right now except i simply got out of a religion.... i am not totally clueless; i fortunately was allowed to do most of the normal things that kids do while growing up (play videogames, watch all the tv shows i wanted [including smurfs] & listen to the music i liked) so i am not a total square.
however, i am 24 next month and yet i am out of 'friends' & relatives to hang out with (they ditched when i da'ed) and i have only made two true friends outside of meetings/school/work in my whole life.

I remember this movie very well. There are too many frightening similarities between Brandon Fraser's character's life, and JWs who leave the organization. I'm still inside, but I know that once I leave for good, things will be fo different then living inside the JW bubble. I know when the day comes, I will have alot to learn, and it's going to take awhile.
Right now, I just see a need to build up a social life and I am so frustrated because I don't know how...anyone here who went through something even close to this? I doubt that someone might be able to relate but you never know.
I can totally relate, since I was raised in a similar situation. Have you considered maybe trying some kind of group activities, maybe a sports league, martial arts, or some other kind of club in your town? What about the true friends you have made outside the organization? Would it be possible to ask them for help in meeting new people?
For me, before I leave, I'm trying to build myself a social network outside the jws, with people I've met at school. All I can say is to be patient, and keep your eyes open for opportunities to meet new people.

Do You Think We Are Hurting The Organization By What We Do Here?
by minimus in....i sure hope so.
i wonder if we are making a real difference here.
i do hope we are chipping away at the very foundation of the organization.
-
Nocturne
I think we are hurting the organization with what goes on here. What's great about this board, is that you get different perspectives from people around the world, and their experiences with the organization. Many JWs have doubts, and since they can't really turn to the congregation about them, they'll start searching on the internet, and find places like this. They will start reading, and realize that some of the things they notice in their congregation are not just isolated cases, but others have had similar experiences.
It's thanks to this board that I've found the truth about the "Truth".

A few questions for a fence sitter
by JV inwhat goes on at elders meetings?
i'm curious, how do they know things that i've told people in confidence?
what do they talk about, do that have a list of people and then talk about every single person?
-
Nocturne
Hey JV,
Welcome to the board.
I'm curious, how do they know things that i've told people in confidence?
There is no such thing as a private conversation among JW. If you tell someone something in private. It will come out. JW love to gossip, so whatever you told people in confidence must have been gossip worthy since it made it all the way to the elders. -

What was your excuse for skipping meetings?
by dustyb in.
i always said my knee hurt, or i was sick, or too tired (i'd always make it a point to stay up till like 4:00 am on saturday nite)....
-
Nocturne
Being sick is a popular one. I used that one alot to miss school when I was a kid. Sometimes, I would conveniently not wake up in the morning, and by the time I was forced out of bed, I didn't have time to to get ready for the meeting.

college education=spiritual weakness?
by twvsnt inhi i'm twvsnt and i've been a witness for 3 years now.
im glad this site exists.
i've been meaning to speak to fellow witnesses who are more open-minded.
-
Nocturne
hey twvsnt,
First off welcome to the board! You will definitely find open minded people here. However since you enjoy being a JW, I would just like to say that most people here are no longer JW.
I understand exactly what your going through with the attitude you get from some of the people in your congregation. I'm currently enrolled into an undergraduate program, and when I first started, I got alot of attitude from other people in my congregation. Even during a talk, and elder warned of the dangers of a college education saying pretty much the things people have said about you...you're materialistic, you're not putting Jehovah first etc... He also went on to say that those who do ignore the wts' suggestion about college education either quit being a JW, or they end up being so spiritually weak by the time they finish.
I don't regret the decision I took to get an education, and I encourage you to continue with your education. It's a great life experience, that many who are/were JW never got, so don't throw that away because of what a couple of people in the congregation say. Just ignore those type of people who like putting others down because you don't do as they please, but in the end make sure you do whatever is right for you.

Torn between worlds - How do you manage to co-exist?
by truthseeker inlike many doubting witnesses, i am in (physically) and out (mentally).. .
i have family in (physically) and i have family out (mentally).. some of my family are out (physically) but are somewhat still in (mentally) due to the mind control.. how do i deal with it?
i don't know - some days go by and i just get on with life.
-
Nocturne
I'm still in physically, and completely out mentally. It's really hard keeping up appearances, but for now I support it because of family. This hasn't been going on for too long, only a couple of months, but I'm not sure exactly when I'm going to exit physically, or how exactly. I just keep my options open, and I know when the time to leave comes, I'll take full advantage of that opportunity.
For now, all I do is keep a low profile, and even that's tough because I'm losing my friends inside because of it, and since I don't have many friends outside the organization, it gets lonely sometimes. There's this awful feeling of limbo, and I get frustrated sometimes at the situation.
I'm usually an optimistic person, so I have a good feeling for the future that things will work out for the best. I hope they do for you too truthseeker.

"The Apostates Are Infiltrating The Congregations Now"
by minimus inat the circuit assembly, my mother mentioned to me that the society is warning of a new danger.
there are witnesses that are on the internet reading apostate things but are still members of the congregation.
they are slowly being infiltrated by the 'apostates' and are still amongst us.

Guilty as charged . When i used to be a good JW, I always wondered how easily it would be for apostate to infiltrate the congregation, and how they could go easily undetected by the rest of the congregation. I wonder how many there are in the congregations?

I remember when doind a door a few years ago, there was a sign on it saying: "No solicitors, peddlers. No matter how good you think your cause is, we're not interested".
