congregational cliques
by chuckyy init was my experience during my 13 yrs as a jw that congregations usually had a social clique.
in other words, there would be a group of people in a congregation that would only associate (and sometimes only go out on field service too) with people within that social clique.
if you were in the clique, fine.

As you age in life and get involved in other groups, friends, etc. there's always cliques.

An Appalling Lack Of Manners & Social Graces
by Why Georgia inis it just me or are a lot of jehovahs witnesses just completely mannerless and lacking in social graces?.
examples....... they don't seem to say thank you for gifts or kindnesses.. i went to quite a few gatherings and burps and farts would happen without so much as a pardon me or excuse me.
i was even told once it's natural and there is no reason to say excuse me.. they will just stop in at your house if they are in the neighborhood and stay for however long without even calling or getting your hints that you happened to be on your way out.. i have met some very nice and polite witnesses but they are few and far between.. is my experience limited - has anyone else noticed rudeness, and a lack of manners and social graces?.

I'm with you Country Girl about people in general having no manners. I make it a practice to give people the right of way, and you know what, I feel good about it. Surprisingly, there is still good mannered people out there.
The scripture about casting your bread upon the waters and you will find it again, I've experienced it. Eccl 11:1
Yes, the JW's need a course on manners and respect.

Why I am leaving JWD
by logansrun ini'm leaving this forum...at least temporarily.
as i mentioned in conversation over dinner at the chicago apostafest, my upcoming school schedule (which begins next week) combined with my workload will make it very difficult to be an active member on this forum.
perhaps i'll check in occassionaly when life is a little slower but for now i'd better distance myself from the on-line scene or else the other elements in my life will suffer.

Seven006, you reminded me what the late Will Rogers said, "The more I travel the more I realize how little I know."

So Brad, my wife was right all along, she says I'm not 'normal.' I was getting worried there for awhile.
Enjoy your studies and relax a bit, OK?

Jonah as Fiction
by Leolaia inthe book of jonah contains one of the most famous stories in the ot: the account of a cowardous prophet who was swallowed whole by a giant fish.
the only other mention of jonah in the ot however is absolutely silent about this remarkable story (2 kings 14:25), and there is much evidence that the book is a late tale written after the babylonian exile.
the book is unique among the twelve minor prophets for being mostly narrative and it has much in common with post-exilic haggada (such as the first-century lives of the prophets, which added considerably to the jonah legend), the "great city" of ninevah is little more than a distant, vague memory (as evidenced by such things as the anomalous title "king of ninevah" and the non-mention of the king's name in jonah 3:6), legendary touches like the giant fish and the magical growth of the castor-oil plant, and especially the late aramaisms rife in the book (such as spynch in 1:5, ht'st "to think" in 1:6, stq in 1:12, mnh in 2:1, and so forth).

Leol, that is some 'tough love' since the Ninevites didn't know their ass from their elbow!

sKally, two locals brought it to my attention. There are two books, one with pictures and one without.
Why people just can't except secret societies is beyond me. There's at least three groups in my community. The secret is, the society that control these groups are behind the scenes. These used groups are just fronts.
Someone recently posted about spirits or demons that don't exist. Well, any time they want to visit me, I'll introduce them to people who do. In my community groups casts evil spells on others. Of course, if no one wants to believe it, so be it. People considered my grandmother a witch.
I remember playing in a golf tournament in Jamaica (runawaybay) with a group of golfers and we were invited to a party where demons resided. The tour master said, people have been challenged to stay over night at this mansion and one or two took the challenge. Anyways, supposedly they lost their minds. I was interested in the party not the demons, besides, I was having my own spirits.
So, the History Channel? Thanks for the info.

HB, you hit the nail on the head when you said, 'childish.' I don't know your situation so I can't contribute much. You know your family and friends better than I do, so proceed accordingly.
We on the board understand your situation but the so-called 'christians' friends/relatives don't. Their initial reaction will always be negative and most often stay in that mode.
Do you think staying aloof for awhile would be to your advantage? Just a thought.
